Re: Any experience or knowledge about this winch?

No experience but I will make some observations. Military means it's built to go beyond the 7500 rating. It's no doubt off some oddball wheeled vehicle. It looks like a worm gear with no reduction. You are going to be in it for a non electric, hydraulic pump or mechanical PTO... plus the drive shaft and all that. I would hold out for a Braden or something. I would, personally, get the PTO or hydraulics setup and working and then make the winch purchase around that setup. The winch is cheap, but it's all the other stuff you need to drive it that will kill the project.

Anyhow, If you got the thing running it would probably out last your truck or any components driving it!

Re: Any experience or knowledge about this winch?

guys over at steel soldiers forum would prob know if you posted it in the general section .

as said above tho . . hooking up pto drive to anything else is a bit of work .

also like most military winches there is no free spool on the winch . so its cable in and out under power only .

Are you saying that there is no free spool on this winch?

Re: Any experience or knowledge about this winch?

yep . look at the winch . no pull knob or spot for lever i see . it might have a spot for it . i see a shaft but no description near it for its use . so dont be surprised if its power in/out . best to ask the seller or search the net for info on the winch .

and lots of military units are power in/out . as there designed for team work and troops of guys . so there is always a guy to pull as another run's the lever .

Re: Any experience or knowledge about this winch?

howdy Doug!

so what's the caper, lookin to set up a pto winch in something?

I'm thinkin might put you way ahead to salvage one out of another truck..

I found this guy a couple of years ago, was still around a year later, may still be??

it's a '70 Burb, by the looks of the SPID it was a GSA rig of some kind, maybe .mil issue..

anywho, it's a wreck, diff left open, interior rotted, etc. but I was only interested in the winch..

he wanted too much for me just for parts so I left it..

you may be able to find similar to suit your needs or I'll do some digging through my phone for a number if you're interested..

good luck!

There is a spot for a lever and I have found some pictures on the net of some with levers. There is VERY little information that i can find out there on this particular winch or the manufacturer.I did message the seller for more info but haven't heard back yet. Thanks for your input.

Hello! Good to hear from ya killer. I have purchased a 1967 C20 that is in the process of being converted to a K20. Its a 292 4 speed and its rough! It is going to stay rough as far as appearance and it will see its fair share of swamps in my area. I am hung up on a pto driven winch on the front and I am in the hunt and gather stage. I ran a crossed these winches and find them interesting. Machining parts and fabing brackets is all part of the fun.

The small shaft on the right side accepts a lever to disengage via a dog clutch. The free spool is a disengagement.... almost 100% sure. It's a common design.

Too bad you're so far away. I have a Ramsey 12k winch I'd practically give away in TX.

Nope, the free spool handle is missing from the lower right "stud" on the case. I have an electric version of this winch (Hickey). They were sold as Hickey, Desert Dynamics and Thor all made by Ramsey. Look at Ramsey DC-200 series. Mine is completely rebuilt but for some reason this is the only picture I have of it before I had it shipped to me. These were optional and they rest in between the front frame rails under the radiator support behind the bumper. Search here for Hickey winch if you want to see pictures of it installed. There are a few of us that have them.

Yep, pretty much the same winch. All you need to do is take the transfer case off and hook the input to PTO to the input.

If OP wants confirmation the side opposite side is clutch and not output, just check out the case. Gear side has oil fill and oil drain holes, clutch side has grease fitting for the clutch shaft... no gear oil on that side = no gears.

The simplicity of the winch is what makes it so robust.

Here's the winch in a nutshell: Input to worm -> worm turns main gear -> main gear turns shaft(NOT DRUM) -> The shaft is engaged with the drum at the other end of the case by the clutch dog. Too simple!
