Fuel guage problems
My fuel guage does not move anymore. It has found its resting place past the full mark, it hangs out at about the 2 or 3 o'clock position and just sits there. I know I need a new fuel sending unit in my gas tank but why did my needle go completly out of the e to f range? thanks for any help, and where do you recomend I get an aftermarket fuel sending unit

check your connection on the fuse box..........it should be a brown wire if memory serves me right, it is just a female connector that conects to the fuse box......it comes out sometimes. If it isn't that then well move onto the next thing, sending unit or the wiring to the gauge.

While we are on the subject. My gauge works
but wiggles back and forth about a half inch even when it is sitting still. Do I need a new sending unit ?

I've got gremlins in my fuel gauge too (in my 3/4 ton). But mine jumps from normal to way past full (about 3 or 4 o'clock), stays there for a few seconds, then falls back to normal. It does this continuously.

If your gauge goes way past full, then you probably have an open circuit between the sending unit and the gauge. Check that the brown wire from the tank is connected (both at the tank and at the fuse box). If the brown wire is OK (test at the fuse box with a multimeter 90 ohms is full, 0 ohms is empty) then the open could be in the printed circuit harness.
typical fault tree needle way past full..... open circuit between sending unit and dash sending unit is bad needle stays on empty... short between sending unit and dash leak in sending unit float needle works but only between 1/4 and empty 82 ohm ballast resistor behind gauge is bad needle bounces around bad gauge Use a multimeter when in doubt. |

Nice troubleshooting steps ssls6. Any idea if you can fix the bad guage that bounces? What part in the guage would cause it to bounce?
I just replaced my tank, sending unit etc and filled up for the first time and I got the bouncy gauge syndrome.

HMMMM, BRAND NEW SENDING UNIT HERE, READS EMPTY, SOUNDS
LIKE THE FLOAT ON MINE MAY HAVE SANK / GOT A LEAK IN IT.
