Re: How do you install gas tank grommet

The easiest way is to pull the tank... But pull the seat... cut the old one out... you will need a trim tool... and alot of patience and pull it through...

Re: How do you install gas tank grommet

If your tank is already installed lube your new grommet with dish soap and it will work in with a little hand work .My first one did not last long and I did not want to remove the tank when I got a good grommet.

X2, all I had on hand was WD40, cut the old one out and slid the new in. No problem, don't need to remove the tank.

Cut the old one out, lube the new one with wd40 and pop it in. 5 minute job.

X2 on the dish soap.
I used a screwdriver to carefully work it in to place. Keep it soaked in dish soap and it only takes a few minutes

Warming the grommet up in the sun a bit first never hurts either. Makes it a tad more pliable.

What is this Sun you speak of?

Hopefully your grommet is a good quality one like Wes sells at Classic Heartbeat. Those grommets are sooo nice, and pretty darn easy to install.

Re: How do you install gas tank grommet

Man, I just tried doing this yesterday with the tank in. Lubed up or not, warm, cold, whatever... it is a pain in the neck to do with the tank installed. I got the grommet from Wes at Classicheartbeat and it is solid heavy duty rubber. Not the squishy pliable stuff from the parts store. If you can, remove the seat and tank. Put the grommet in, then slide the tank through it. I used windex to lube it up. After 30 minutes of trying to poke the new one in place with a screwdriver i just pulled the tank.

Re: How do you install gas tank grommet

In addition to dish soap or something like, seems to me a heat gun is in order.

I've heard that though the company claims otherwise, typical WD40 is bad for rubber, because "it contains petroleum distillates (paint thinner)". You're likely fine, but I try to avoid it.

Make SURE your replacement is good. I was never able to find a suitable grommet for my 1970 402 Longhorn and wound up reusing the original even though it was a fairly high end restoration. I glass beaded it and turned it upside down, razor blade trim and tire shine spray, looked close to new!

But if I had cut it, I'd have been hooped! So just make sure...

Re: How do you install gas tank grommet

For those of us without much sun these days...boiling it in water for a minute will do the trick and won't risk scorching it. Don't forget your gloves!

AND 71Chev... is right, no petroleum based oils just to be on the safe side. Soap or synthetic oil//grease only. Petroleum will speed up the decomposition process.

Well, at least remove the grommet from your sub-zero garage and bring it into your house for a few hours before trying to work with it! I forget about the rest of the world when I'm basking in the sun out here in SoCal.

I used wd40 on it almost 10 years ago. Rubber hasn’t deteriorated yet
