However though years of patience and understanding I can put the fiber optic cable back in by feel...

Here are a couple of pictures. Are you missing the metal retainer on the back of your socket by any chance? If it is there and isn't bent the cable should not come out. The retainer locks it in.

Actually I do have a tilt column waiting to be installed so when that happens I guess regular bulb holder with an LED will go into that socket.

leon is greg saying that he has a socket like this on the back of his inst panel? I don't see one......

I don't know. I dont remember seeing that when i changed dashes. I have to pull my dash to install one of Toms voltage gauge conversion kits and I'll check then. I gues when i get thetilt installed I can go regular socket with an LED like the rest of the dash.

Looks like he has a regular bulb socket in that hole.
