Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

Quick update. I pulled the back cover in sunday, the gears and posi look solid, no real wear issues I could see. Oil looked black but nothing shiny in it (I was expecting glitter...). Pulled the pin and the c-clips and slid the axles out.

Got the backing plates off yesterday and will be cleaning them up and painting them tonight... then assembling the brakes. I have the outer bearings now, so once I find a slide hammer I'll slap those in and button the whole thing back together. Then the fun cleaning the axle!

Pics probably this weekend, my garage is too dark for my camera to take decent pics. I need a few more lights!

Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

Today's progress. Also picked up an adjustable panhard bar from CPP. Hoping to have the axle done by next weekend. Then I can move to the front.

Yep. A little at a time, I'll get there. I have a lot of the parts already, mostly missing the engine, trans, and a bed. Other than that I can make this thing a roller with the parts I have. Holding off on the drivetrain until I have the rest done and... I have room for it!!! My garage is already packed full of parts!!!

Just snagged a pair of big block stands, decided the truck's an original big block truck, and i don't have an engine... ok, twist my arm. So when I get close to done with the chassis I'll start looking on CL for a 396/402/454. See them all the time for reasonable prices, and about the same as for a small block, so again, twist my arm.

Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

Well tried to pull my axle bearings with a slide hammer today, good thing I'm replacing them... they blew apart the second I hit it with the slide hammer! The race is all that's left in there.... and it won't come out with the slide hammer. Can't even get a hold of it. Brainstorming to figure out WTF to do with this

anybody have any ideas?

Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

Got the bearing races out. I tried a couple things but the simplest way wound up being ridiculously easy.

I grabbed a 2.5" flat washer from Ace last night for $1.20. This morning I cut off 1/2" from 2 sides, then ground down the outsides to 2 3/8. Put the washer over the bolt for the slide hammer and a smaller washer to keep it flat. Slipped it into the axle tube, 2 whacks of the slide hammer, and it's out. Same on the passenger side. Took me about 15 minutes of grinding to get the right shape for the tube, but worked like a charm. No more fighting with 12 bolt axle bearings.

Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

Got the axle stripped and painted yesterday. Trailing arms are next, along with the shock brackets and U-bolts. Can't wait to see this all assembled.

Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

Got rid of that last year sometime, when I decided to go for the 68 front end. Wasn't in that great of condition. Looked better in pics than it actually was.

And yea, truck is a BBC truck, gotta put a BBC back in.

Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

Started to tear apart the front suspension last night and pulled the front springs. This is what I found... I'm thinking these were cut down to 7" drop!!!! Think must have rode like a tank. Those are stock springs they are next to.

Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

Today's disassembly. Still have to unbolt the crossmember and remove the brake lines. Past that all I have to do is remove the parking brake cables, fuel and brake lines, rear wiring harness, and transmission crossmember and I can drag the frame out to the sandblaster's. Then the fun part, painting and reassembly!!!

Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

More random pics. Also my handy dandy axle bearing removal tool. 2.5" washer, cut down to fit. The non-cut one was for installation with a socket. Worked like a charm.

Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

Whipped this together this morning while the girls were at the library. Handy Dandy Cab Dolly. Only cost me the screws and the casters, I had a bunch of 2x4's left over from building a room in the garage... putting them to good use finally.

Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

Thanks guys! Rob, took me an hour and $32. Probably less if I didn't have the dog bugging me every couple minutes to throw the toy for her!

Re: 69 LWB Power Tour Rig

So I got some serious work done today, got the frame out from under the cab, and dragged it out into the driveway. Pulled all the crap out of the garage and cleaned the whole thing out for phase 2 - ASSEMBLY! The frame is getting sent to the sandblasters on tuesday, so while it's gone I will start painting some of the other parts and getting ready to put the chassis together. Can't wait to get this thing back and put it together!

Here's some pics of the pulling the frame out.
