I think Woody said it needed the complete steel dash, the original has several badly rusted places, at least one rusted thru. I believe the plan is to R&R the whole thing if a suitable replacement can be found.

The P/S driprail is in pretty bad shape, but I don't know exactly what it will require to repair. Woody would know more about that.

Re: Project Underhaulin

I have an A/C Dash I would gladly contribute. It needs a little work (from some idiot hacking it out poorly), but is an uncut A/C dash, already removed from cab.

I just learned of this whole project in the last 10 minutes, so I don't know that I'll be able to make the work weekend, but maybe '71 tahoe could pick it up on his way through Lexington? Just a thought.

Alos, I didn't see anything about a driveshaft being needed, but I'm jus thinking of parts I could contribute. Let me know.

Hey Trai.
Moms not comin home till tomorow so Im takin my grandma to my house tonite. she will be Ok. She just needs to take it easy for a while. shes been thru alot lately. Her neighbor came to check on her and he asked if she sold her truck cause he saw all yall here. She hasnt told him much cause he has 4 kids and she doesnt want him feelin bad that he cant help her as much as he would like to. anyway, I told him what was goin on and last nite I heard a noise on the porch and i looked out and saw him puttin an envelope on her door. This is part of the note he left... Your mama and daddy has fed my kids more then once and if it wasnt for them, we would have had our lights cut off quite a few times since I got hurt. I loved your daddy like a brother. He was a very good man. Your mama is a strong and brave woman and I wish she would ask for my help more but she wont. I just got part of some back pay and I want you to give this $300.00 to the guys thats doin this for her and you tell them God Bless all of them.

Please dont tell your mama or any one it was me.

As soon as moms home and settled in tomorow, I will have a money order made out to David and send it right off.

Thanks for yalls prayers Trai.
Your friend,
Tiffany
So, now we are at $905.00.

Re: Project Underhaulin

I just don't know what to say. That email just touches me. This whole thing you guys are doing touches me.

I feel really good about this opportunity to help, and almost can't believe the offers for parts and labor that are coming in, but on the other hand I can, 'cause i know what a great group we've got here.

I'm proud to be even a small part of this thing.

Way to go, guys!!!!

Re: Project Underhaulin

Ok guys, I got off the phone with Woody tonight and since Woody is limited on his computer time I am going to repost the parts list in this thread. I'll keep it updated as far as what everyone has pledged/donated There will be a link to it on the 1st page and 1st thread of this build, and also in my signature.

The list below is based on Woody's original list. If you see ?? that means I am unsure or it's not final yet. If I miss anything feel free to PM me.

As far as wheels and tires go, we have several offers. I think one thing we should keep in mind is replacement cost for tires when the time comes. Dawn has a set of 8" ralleys on another truck, a set of 7" (?) bullet holes on another. As far as lowering the truck, it should not be substantial or she would not like it.

71 tahoe has 3" belltech lowering springs. I personally think 3" would be fine, but no more. 3" is definitely not slammed by any means. I think we could go 3"-4" in the rear too. Thoughts?

Yeah I think 3-4 would give it a nice aggressive stance...

Re: Project Underhaulin

Ok I got a few more questions.
1) did we figure out if we are going with pionts or HEI ?

2)Does any one think it would be a nice swap to go with a newer serpentine belt accessory drive? If so I have a complete setup including the power steering pump, alternator, a/c pump(if needed),and I can warranty a new water pump. I think it would be a nice setup so Dawn doesnt have to worry about belts squelling or worse throwing belts going down the high way. Just a thought....

3) I can pick up the hoses also, just let me know on the serpentine drive system, because you need specific hoses.

4) What thermostat do we wnat to run? 180 or 195 not sure about the weather down there? or maybe a 160..let me know, I can get that too!

I have the front shock to go with the springs also. I have the front rotors, calipers, brake pads, and spindles also. As far as the rear 5 lug axle,Im still checking on it...should know by wednseday!

Thanks,
Greg Tholen

Greg, It is HEI. The dist. I picked up seems to be tight but I didn't check the vaccum advance, will do that and post results.
I'd say let's go with the Serpentine set up, as you said, it will keep things simpler for Dawn and 180 stats work well around here.
At this point, going with 5 lug seems to be the best option as it opens up the options for wheels and a 3/4 drop would look really good.

Tynee, thanks for the offer on the dash but this is a non A/C truck and it would mean filling more holes. This one is rust through in several places right next to the windshield and in the speaker grill.

The truck has a drive shaft in it and I picked up an extra yoke while at Dawn's.

Keith,I may have the drip rail, there is a cut up cab on my scrap trailer and I will check to see if it is good. As for the mirrors, the truck would certainly look better with sport mirrors but we need to check with Dawn and see if she has a preference.

A big thanks to everyone.
Woody

Good question on the interior color. Dawn has mentioned that she would like to go with a white with some pearl so the inside could be almost anything. We will try to get her input on that and let you know.

Re: Project Underhaulin

Maybe I just missed it, but have we come up with a date for a work day? I know I'm unavailable the first two weekends of October, don't know beyond that.

BTW, using an A/C dash only means filling more holes if we don't add A/C. Tahoe offered the Serp. setup with the A/C compressor and I have a condensor coil that MAY not leak ( I can have it tested ahead of time), its just a few more parts and cutting an additional hole in the firewall from there. Its just a thought.

I'm sorry....I must have misread the auction. The auction is now at $25.99 with 9 days and 3 hours to go!

OK Guys and Gals...to make this a little more interesting here is what I am going to do. Whoever wins this auction I will pay for one full year of memebrship to this site. So it looks like this...you win the magazine and I will through in one year of membership to this fine site. How is that for incentive.
Sooooo here is what we have for a small donation: 1 Classic Truck Magazine, 52 weeks or 1 year whichever comes first of free membership to this fine site, you get the priviledge of knowing there is only one winner and that is you, you get the honor of knowing you are prying a prized magazine out of my hands...but must of all you are helping a neighbor in time of need. Ok...lets put the pedal to the metal!!!
