Re: Buying a car on the internet

.
Congrats!

My brother-in-law did this too and he ended up just fine. Purchased a 911 from a dealer in CA and had it shipped to TX. It arrived in exactly the shape advertised...pristine 6sp manual, beautiful and almost perfect.

Definitely looking forward to your updates here. I think you'll be a happy camper provided you purchased from a Porsche dealer and they take pride in their reputation.

Re: Buying a car on the internet

I think that I got ripped off. It's a lot smaller than I thought.

Actually the real one should be here soon.(I hope) My bank took forever to give me my own money. What are you going to do? They're the bank. They make the rules.

One thing that I can say about buying a car on the net is that it's a very slow process. At least for me. I'll just be glad when it finally shows up. But now all I can do is wait.

Re: Buying a car on the internet

Paul, please do your homework. Service records, service records, I can't stress that enough.
996 and early 997 were notorious for "Intermediate shaft bearing " failure (Boxters too). Anything over 50000 miles, they could fail, and the Pistons impact the valve train. It's not a big fix, but it is a motor out service. Any Porsche dealer will tell by the VIN if it is within the series of failures. We have owned a number of 911's from air cooled to a new 991.2. Great cars, reliable.

Thanks man. But this one has a new IMS bearing and clutch. I know I'm rolling the dice even with that. And it does scare me. But no one ever said that I was smart. And I already bought it.

Re: Buying a car on the internet

It's FINALLY here. I think that I got lucky on this one. It's a nice car. It just took a long time to get it here.

I only took one picture because I live in the desert and it was hotter than Hades out there today and I ran back into the air conditioning like a sissy boy.

It looks like it has some weird scuff on the trunk/hood. But that's just the picture. This thing is flawless.

Two big problems though.

#1 I have to clean my garage.

#2 Now my wife wants a Boxster.

Right? It took over 2 months to get my HELOC loan for my garage... from the same bank we've banked with for 15 years and have our home loan through. We have over 200K in equity in our house and I was only asking for 25K to finish the shop.

Car looks great! Having driven the entire PCH and mulholland a couple times... I can definitely think of some great areas to take it.

Side story... are there any local folklore stories of "ghost cars" on Mulholland? It was near dusk, I had a rental mustang with paddle shifters, and I was REALLY getting on it, to the point my wife was getting a little sick going around corners... anyway, this damn 80's looking brown VW bus was tracking me almost step for step... for miles. Kinda freaked me out. There was no way in hell he was keeping up with me, even up some pretty steep hills. I don't remember seeing any turn-offs... looked back and it was gone. Wife still brings it up every now and again. I'm sure there's some explanation, but it did freak us out a bit.

You need to get a bumper sticker made, though. "My Other Car is a C/20". Can't have people thinking you're stuck driving that thing all the time. It's not like they'd take pity anyway

Re: Buying a car on the internet

I don't have to worry about me putting it in the river. The way I drive I'll be lucky to get it out of second gear.

But my wife is a different story. If you want to see her lose her mind just put a steering wheel and a gas pedal in front of her. Then hang on.

No. It took me many years but I've learned to keep my big mouth shut. I learned that pissing off women can become very expensive. These days I just smile and nod. "Yes dear"

Re: Buying a car on the internet

Por-shuh. I dated a girl named that. But the way you spell it is Portia. It cracks me up when people suddenly start speaking a foreign language just to say the name of their car. I grew up with them being a Porsh, that is the American way to pronounce it. Look it up, you'll see there is the English and the German pronunciation. "I was born in the USA... Born in the USA"

It started in the '80s when foreign cars started taking over, mostly Japanese. The funniest ones are Citreon and Renault. I ain't French and the way I heard those said was Sit-tree-on and Ree-nalt. In the '80s I start hearing people say "I got tires for my Ray-no". I wondered if they pronounced it Paris or Pay-ree

Re: Buying a car on the internet

I'll never be a Por-shuh snob. You got the wrong guy. I never bought into the Corvette snob stuff either. I see those guys at car shows with Corvette logo's plastered on everything they wear and own and are all full of themselves and I think it's ridiculous.

These are simply machines that I like. And through the grace of god and a lot of hard work I am fortunate enough to own.

Why should I take any credit for the car. I didn't build it.

I did take my wife out for a spin last night. Whoa! This baby is fast. It definitely gets the old adrenaline pumping. My wife actually told me to slow down I never thought I'd hear that.

Not a ghost story, but, years ago when turbo diesel trucks first started getting popular, a friend of mine bought a new Dodge Cummins, hooked onto a horse trailer, and headed out west to hunt one fall. He was making the long grind up the mountain on I-70 west of Denver, when he caught up with a 71-72 SWB K10 pulling a travel trailer.

The Chevy caught his eye because it was really nice. He pulled around the Chevy and started a conversation on the CB. After a couple of exchanges about the rigs, new and old, My friend made a comment about the Cummins out pulling the K10. The guy in the Chevy said "What do you mean?". My friend repeated his sentiment about the diesel out pulling the gas rig.

The guy in the K10 replied "Oh, I didn't know we were racing.".

My buddy looked the mirror, and the K10 was closing in on him, and in a second passed him easily.

When they got to the pass, the K10 was pulled over, and my friend stopped to see what was up. Turns out the K10 had a blown big block in it.
