Snake
So. I'm sitting around with my friends having a couple of beers.
My one buddy says "Hey Paul is that a snake? I look over and see that there's a big snake in my living room. No big deal. It's a California King Snake. Harmless. But I don't want my dogs to go after it. I like King Snakes. They kill Rattlesnakes. But I don't want it in my living room. So I try to grab it. It get's away and it disappears. (They move fast) Unbelievably fast. I can't find it. I wait it out. And then I see it and take a broom and try to sweep it out the door and this thing was wiggling all over the place. The damned door was locked and I don't know if I got it out or not. It took me a minute to open the door. And they can obviously hide well. We'll have to see. I may have a new pet.

Re: Snake
Do they get all feisty and aggravated when you push them around the way black snakes do? It's a one shot deal. Grab it and carry it out. If I can't grab them tight while they're slithering they start getting aggressive. Then it really gets fun. Not poisonous but I don't even want a non-poisonous snake bite, thank you!

Re: Snake
King snakes may not be poisonous but they can cause you to hurt yourself while trying to give them room.
I opened the hood on a junk car one time only to find a huuuge king snake laying up on the cowl. I dropped the hood real quick and stepped back. As his head reached the ground his tail was still on the cowl. SHAZBUT! There wasn't anything I needed off that car anyway.. And can you imagine getting into bed and a few minutes later feel something moving up next to and on you under the covers?

Re: Snake
Send that King snake this way. Found this guy yesterday while doing some cleaning prior to the start of summer hot season. A Copperhead if I have my snake ID correct. It did have fangs.

Re: Snake
You guys can keep 'em. Only poisonous ones we have are rattlers and that's more than enough for me.
I had my '69 El Camino when I was living in Kansas. Saw a copperhead on the road and did a burnout on it. Sent up quite a shower of copper-colored scales into the midwest sun!

Re: Snake
At least that copperhead was somewhere you could see him. Put that sucker in some dead leaves and he disappears!
We get pretty much all of them in Arkansas, rattlesnakes, cotton mouths, copper heads, and a slew of non venomous ones that will make you hurt yourself trying to get away from them like Boog said. Your brain just says "snake!" and then you get to identify it from another 20-30 feet away.

He can live in the yard. That's just fine with me. But stay out of the house. I just can't believe that my dogs didn't go crazy. They bark at everything. They bark when there's nothing there. But they paid no attention to me trying to catch a snake in the living room. My German Shepherd just sat on the couch watching like it was a show. They were probably thinking. "Look at that dumb guy. He thinks he's going to catch that snake"

Re: Snake
I chased a Bull Snake out of the county road down by the mailbox a few days ago where it was sunning itself. I didn't want it to get run over.
A few years ago before we built our barn, we had an old refrigerator sitting outside to store stuff. Well, the mice got in it anyway, and then a snake crawled into the chewed out icemaker water line hole, and got stuck! We had to carefully cut the metal to enlarge the hole and let the snake go clear inside and then set it free.

Re: Snake
My wife would be putting the house up for sale.
Snakes are a deal breaker. When we had our place in Pawleys Island SC. we saw a snake at the bottom of the stairs. I had to carry her up the stairs all week. The neighbors thought we were newlyweds. Until they saw me do it over and over again. |

Re: Snake
I'll take your word for it, Dale. A lifetime of allergies has taken much of my sense of smell.
Usually the only time my sniffer works is when I don't really want it to....

Re: Snake
Believe me, they have sweet pungent smell. The hotter it is the better I can smell them. Usually 15 to 20 feet max

Re: Snake
If it has teeth that are actually needles it needs to be put down. So snakes and spiders need to die.

Re: Snake
I agree for the most part. Most snakes in my area get a pass. As long as they're not venomous. Spiders that's a whole other story.

Re: Snake
I can't say about other species of snakes but those baby copper heads are aggressive little buggers. And it's said that the little ones are more deadly than older ones, something about not limiting their venom.
I had one of those babies try to get me out toward the mail box. I barely saw it and what got my attention was it striking at me from a good 6 feet away. It was less than a foot long. Some how or another a rock fell on it. Numerous times I might ad. And where there are babies, there is a mother too. That was several years ago but while weed trimming the other day I ran across another copper head baby. He thought he could handle the trimmer. Not.
