My 89 Full Convertible Blazer

Here is a couple of pics of my 89 Blazer. Just finished the top this weekend. Let me know what you guys think. You can see more pics on www.ck5.com if you register. I posted in the garage forum under the title 1989 Full Convertible Project Done!!!!!! I used the windshield frame, doors and top from a 74 blazer. Here is a write up on how to do it
http://coloradok5.com/full-convertible-conversion.shtml. Let me know what you guys and gals think.

Re: My 89 Full Convertible Blazer

I had an '83 Jimmy, it was a 6.2 700R4. I swapped in a 454 4 speed 60 front & 14 bolt. Had 6" lift with 36s. The full top was the one thing I never got to do. Seeing yours makes me wish I still had it.

Re: My 89 Full Convertible Blazer

Cool I always liked the sound of big blocks. I am getting ready to swap a dana 44 and 14 bolt in. I want to lightly wheel it and still use it as a part time daily driver. Also trying to decide what color I am going to paint it

Re: My 89 Full Convertible Blazer

Very cool.

Is it truely a convertable (does the top go back on) or is it a done deal like it is?

Did you find a 73/75 top for it or something?

Re: My 89 Full Convertible Blazer

Thanks vtblazer, Yes I can run the hard top. I took a 74 windshield frame and top and doors and grafted it on the 89. My buddy Randy and I did the work. He was the Captain on this one. We used baja_blazer write up on ck5. After actually doing it I feel anyone can do it. Main thing is to make your cuts and measurements perfect. Only problem I find with the conversion is if you have never done body work I would leave it for someone that has. Here is a link with pictures on www.ck5.com

Re: My 89 Full Convertible Blazer

I figured that was what you did, I've seen the CK5 info and always thought it was pretty awesome.

Is the family cage next?

Out of curiosity, what's done to compensate for the removal of the roof?
What's keeping the body from folding in on itself now?

Re: My 89 Full Convertible Blazer

Honestly VT, the doors aren't sagging or anything I haven't flexed it yet though. I plan on making a cage with Randy soon he has the tube bender . I am getting ready to install a factory 73-75 rollbar so I can run a bikini top for now. There is nothing like overdrive, fuel inj and A/C.

Re: My 89 Full Convertible Blazer

Digging up an old thread....

Did you ever add any underbody support for the full convertible conversion?

I have a '86 K5 with the full convertible conversion, still weighing options on frame/body stiffening. The body and top tend to make noise when going up a steep driveway at an angle.

Thanks!!

Re: My 89 Full Convertible Blazer

This is an old one. The 73-75`s had rocker boxes to help strengthen the body. I would think some rocker panel bracing would help.

Re: My 89 Full Convertible Blazer

I always figured I'd do a full cage which would act as a truss. It could be at least as stiff as the 76-up top.

Re: My 89 Full Convertible Blazer

Nice K5. I had a rotted out 75 but then found an 85 with SM465 and hydraulic clutch I swapped everything into and cut the roof off of. I had to do rockers in it and ended up using 12 gauge to make the inner rockers. It ran from the front toe kick under the dash to the seat belt lower mounting hole plate. The truck flexed a little on the beach but I think I had a total of $600 into the 2 trucks made into one. I also used the 75's rollbar but had to add 2 little pieces to the bottom of it and then weld nuts inside the quarter panels to bolt the top tabs to. It really helped tie in the quarter panels.

You'd prob have better luck selling your car, finding/buying the later model K5 you want, sourcing the major parts for the conversion like the windshield frame and top, then paying a decent body shop to do the conversion for you.

Later model K5's already converted are somewhat rare and unless you find someone that has one and is hurting for cash, you might have a hard time finding one already done.

I know I wouldn't part with mine very easily or cheaply.

Good luck.
