Doing research on motor swap on C10

I am currently working on my '86 Chevy C10. Right now it got a 305 block with a carburetor that all rusted out and I am thinking about modernizing it by putting a motor in it with a TBI.

Is there a certain year motor with TBI that will drop directly into the '86 truck? From my research, Chevy start making 305 TBI at '88 correct?

If I was to find a donor '88 truck or van and pull the motor, tranny, ECM, wirning harness for ECM, will it drop right in without special adapters or kits?

TBI started in 1987 and ran all the way to 95, I think somewhere in 91 or 92 the ecm changed so I think your best bet would be to find one from 87-90.

The motor/transmission will bolt in just fine assuming you have a 700r4 already, but you will need to change the fuel pump to accommodate the tbi. I would try to find a donor vehicle to get everything you need.

I just saw a '88 GMC on Craigslist that someone parting out so I sent him an email to inquiry about the motor.

I forgot to ask about the gas tank from donor as well too since it should have a return line inlet and a pump in it. Will it bolt on too or modification is needed to the frame?

I am still researching on the tranny, I believe that I have a 700 but doesn't ECM need a specific tranny to monitor it or I can use my with the TBI motor if it a 700r4 from a carb motor?

Thank you
Bill

Re: Doing research on motor swap on C10

What are feelings on a 3.6 LFX or the 4.3 ecotec3.

Both engines are unloved, and are 300+hp. They come with 6 speed autos, and you could probably get them for 3500 complete if not less. Shipped to your door.

If i was still DD my old square body. I would do a 4.3 in a minute on a budget. Maybe even a 3.6 if I wanted a more revvy engine.

My budget unfortunately is like less 1,000 to get either my motor running or get another motor to swap it out.

I am not looking for high performance motor, a simple 305 will do since I wouldn't be driving this truck often but just to haul stuff for my home landscaping or remodeling. And help a friend move stuffs when they needed it.
