Well, I was going to go with an alternator that looks just like a generator because I want modern upgrades but I want the original look under the hood. Then after research, I saw these prices.

Yeah they always do write ups of that kind of stuff in the magazines "the next best thing" and "you can't live without it", the one thing that they fail to tell you is that you would have to second mortgage your house to buy all the parts that they suggest.
I saw an awesome article about using a f#rd tranny and an over/under drive unit, gave you something like 8 gears, from hole shot to .25 overdrive, the best of everything.... they even made it seem like it was a budget deal , they used a junkyard tranny, they didn't mentoin that the over/under drive unit, was around $6000! ouch! I don't know if I will ever have that kind of money to buy just one piece of a project.

Wow!!! I like the original look too but that's a bit on the extreme side for me.

It is pretty sad when a generator/alt costs almost as much as a new crate engine.

can't you go to a generator shop and see how much it would be to rebuild
hope it would not be so bad in price?

The powergen by powermaster is much cheaper then the one your looking at...about half the price... Can get it for $419 from summit. 74 amp internal regulator

yeah you can i got a guy thats been doing stuff for the family now for a good 20 years. starters alternators. from tractors to 4 wheelers.

he can take a stock one rebuild it and make it a whole lot more powerful for just a few more bills than a parts store replacement.

I actually plan to rebuild it myself and have been talking with a guy from Yesteryear Auto Parts. I'm waiting for a quote on all of the components to rebuild it since they don't make a "kit". They offer rebuild services, but I want to do it myself for the experience...

Most of the time the only problem is the brushes. They don't last forever. The shop manual tells you how to do it, and the brushes are only a few bucks. You should be able to buy the parts at a good auto supply. I bought starter brushes for my 6 volt 52 a few months ago.

You can also clean the contacts and adjust the regulator if needed.

It's all fairly simple, and sure beats spending the money for a rebuild.
