Rusty tool box sanding questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've got an old metal tool box that I'd like to paint and throw on the truck. It's got a good bit of surface rust and some angry residents with stingers. I've heard people talking about wet sanding, but I've never done it and I really don't even know what that is. Can someone explain it to me? I'm gonna hopefully start sanding it down and primering it tonight. Thanks.

I think that all you do when you wet sand is dump some water on the surface and use some waterproof sandpaper to sand. It keeps the dust down to like nothing. THats my deffinition atleast.

For something like this, I'd say you'd be better off having it blasted first.

Don't have the equipment or the money for blasting. Just need to make it nice enough to tote around.

I have to agree with Palallin - have it blasted. If you have a good air compressor, you can pick up a blaster for about $20 & do it your self . . . or take it to your local Monument company & have it done for about the same price. You'll be sanding a LONG time by hand & probably never get all the rust - Good Luck

You'll easily spend as much or more on good wet/dry paper as you will on a quick blast job, even if you hire it done.

At least hit it with the rotary wire brush first: sanding the whole box will take a lllooonnnggg time by hand--do you have a power sander?--and eat paper like crazy.
