How to convert from 67 ram assist to normal power steering

hey guys, my 67 has original ram assist on it and I want to do away with it all and convert to normal ps like the later 68-72 trucks have. I have all new front end components and I still have slop in my steering from the old original gear box and plus the ram assist leaks terrible. I’ve seen some guys rebuild theirs, but I’d rather do away with it. I’ve searches and found some good info but nothing exactly stating what all I need to do the conversion. I would appreciate if some of you experts would chime in and help me out, I’m sure this has been done a lot. I know I will need a steering box and from what I gather a 69/72 center link as well. Also a pitman arm. So i assume if I buy a center link that my current inner tie rods and such will bolt right up? Also do I need a new ps pump or will my hoses hook up to the new box. I would like someone to give me a list of everything I will need or need to know to do the swap with so I can assure I have everything! I appreciate y’all guys, lots of knowledge in this forum!

you will need a new center link your tie rods should work but the connecter between them I believe is diffrent either longer or shorter I cant remember . the pump should work fine but the lines are diffrent get the ones for the gearbox you use . pitman arm for sure upgrade the rag joint while your changing the gearbox . and if your frame is flat where the box mounts you have to either space the box out with washers or cut the frame possibly heat and bend with a torch but if it has raised points where it bolts you should have no problem mounting it other than clearincing the bumper bracket

Re: How to convert from 67 ram assist to normal power steering

I am not sure about your truck, but when I converted my manual steering 1968 C10 over to the 1969 and up Saginaw power steering box, I had to change my steering column out as well. The 1968 manual steering column would not work with the power steering box. You will also likely have to dimple the frame for the steering box or run spacing plates for it. My truck was a 1968 but was built in late 1967 and did not have the frame indentation for the power box. Most 1968 up trucks are supposed to.

Re: How to convert from 67 ram assist to normal power steering

A recommended method:

1) buy parts truck with steering system intact
2) set parts truck next to project truck
3) remover pieces in sequence from project truck
4) remove pieces in sequence from donor truck
5) install pieces in sequence on project truck
