I am installing Vintage Air in my 59 pickup. I am installing a bulkhead in firewall, but having no luck figuring out how to hook up lines from evaporater to the bulkhead in the firewall. I am using old style hose connectors....HELP the New Guy!!

Re: Air Conditioning Plumbing??

The only thing you have to remember is on the condenser in front of the rad is that the BIG hose goes on the top!

Re: Air Conditioning Plumbing??

I had a similar challenge with installing Vintage air into my 48. If you go with a aftermarket bulkhead the hoses will not line up. You will need to make your own. I did away with the hard (metal) lines that came with my kit and had new hoses made it was tight but I got it all to work.

Here are a few pics.

The last pic is a friends 48 Suburban that had an installation similar to mine. He actually helped my with my install.

Good luck
Marc

Re: Air Conditioning Plumbing??

If you have not cut a hole in your firewall there is enough room to run the hoses in the inside vent opening in the kick panel.

You need to make up your own hoses cut to length and crimped by a a/c shop.
The folded hose in the pic is the heater hose that was not cut in half when the pic was taken

Re: Air Conditioning Plumbing??

I like that soildaxel. I wanted to hide all my hoses under the fenders too for a cleaner look.

Re: Air Conditioning Plumbing??

Solid axle has the right idea. With his plan, you save a couple hundred on A/C fittings alone. Most are $20.00 each and you save yourself (8) without using a bulkhead. I learned that the hard way..

This was a a/c unit installed in a '55, you can see how the hoses had to be run and how it was covered up..

Re: Air Conditioning Plumbing??

This a a/c install in a '52 chevy sub. the inner fender had to have a cut out installed to be able to get the hoses through.. the unit wasn't to hard to hook up on the inside (not as bad as the '55)

Re: Air Conditioning Plumbing??

what unit are you installing?
both youngrodder and solidaxle are running the gen II compac in their ad trucks
parkwood's tf has the 55-59 surefit system.

i wanted the newer electronic controls and ran the gen II compac in my 58
i highly recommend that you install the unit before you paint your cab
this way you can weld in brackets and captive nuts if needed
the downfall of this is that your unit will be out of warranty by the time you use the ac
but they are very forgiving over at vintage air, i needed parts and help 7 yrs after buying the unit
va was very accommodating

Re: Air Conditioning Plumbing??

I have the Surefit system--It's just so tight of space, but I think I'm getting Ideas how to do it. Again, to bad they don't make a unit for both applications, that would be too easy!! That's why we call it "Custom" lol.
