AD Speedometer Connection

54 GMC.I'm at the point where it's a good time to run the speedometer cable. What I would like is a single cable from the transfer case (connection is at far rear) to the speedometer.
Now my donor vehicle is a 72 K2500. It looks as if a cable around 80 inches will be plenty long.

The only remnants I have are at the t/case. The cable was cut off there.

My big question is: Do the old 54 speedo heads have the same connection as the 72 speedo heads? The 54 appears to take a screw on collar type but I don't have the 72 to look at anymore.
What do you think would work for me to connect the NP205 to the 54 speedo head? Thanks Rick

I have a '54 Chevrolet 3100 and have the OE type speedo hooked up to a Borg Warner 5 speed trans (90,s Astro van) I'm pretty sure it's the same speedo hook up at the trans as yours. I bought my cable from American classic, but it looks like a standard GM housing and cable that the later years used, screw threads on both ends. it seems they had several different lengths to choose from. Yours will have to be about a ft. longer. I hope I understood your question correctly.

Napa shows that they have three cables that fit my 71 GMC and they do have the right ends on them and your 72 donor should be the same ends.

If that doesn't work Go to Napa online and put 72 Chev truck in the info and speedometer cable in the search No discount price here is under 30.00 for either of them.

Got one of those cheap 1/2 inch garden hoses laying around that you haven't thrown away yet? cut a section about 100 inches long and slip one end in through the hole in the firewall to the back of the speedometer or where it should be and loop the hose around to the speedometer connection on the transfer just like you want to run the cable, cut the end off at the right spot and pull it out and you have the length you need.

Thanks you guys I see how the ends are now. just have to get close to the right length. Putting the cab on this weekend so maybe get a better measurement. Sorry for the newbie question but I learned a lot so thank you, Rick

You shouldn't have a problem once you figure out the right. If memory serves right the stock length for the AD cable just reaches the speedo drive in in a stock three or four speed and comes up short when you swap in other engine/trans combos.
