How can I tell of my bearings are bad?

I just pulled off my rear wheels to redo brakes and I want to know if my bearings are bad or not... The axel it self moves back and forth about a quarter of an inch. It is an original posi if it makes any difference.

Bad bearings will grind a bit when they're turned - you'll hear it. If you have them out, look for pitting/wear on the rollers.
