12V truck to 5V electronics

I made up a set of sequential tail lights that I'm thinking about putting in the back window of my cab (with an OFF switch). So a supplement to the existing brake and signals.

It looks something like this:

So I need inputs from the vehicle: left turn, right turn, backup, stop. If I share ground between the truck and the circuit, then I imagine I could use simple voltage divider circuits?

I wasn't sure so ordered a set of small isolation relays (with 12V triggers) worst case.

Thoughts? I'm not an electrical guy!

Re: 12V truck to 5V electronics

I've played around with circuits a bit. I would be more inclined to do a voltage regulator.

Here is one. 16V max imput, 5V output, handles 1.5A.

You could rip apart a Cig lighter USB charger and use whatever is inside.

Surprised I am not seeing more 'plug and play' options on Amazon.

Here is one I found on Amazon. Don't know how much I care for the company, hard to tell if they are legit or cheap junk.

For logic signal, A voltage divider with 10K resistor at the top and 4.7V zener diode as the bottom leg would be best. Top hit on Google for voltage divider with zener shows this:

For powering the chip use a buck step down converter like one of these:
