Re: 52 Project

Smooth firewall. Do you plan on running all of your hoses/wires thruogh the bottom, or are you coming through the new firewall?

Re: 52 Project

Daniel, I really haven't giving that much thought. I know he wants to get a Vintage Air setup and it has a firewall pass through. The wiring????? I am guessing that I can run it down by the steering column....but I will worry about that at a later date. We went with that firewall because the original one was pretty trashed and we are putting a big block in it and I needed a little more room. I still have to do some more clean up, but this was some good progress in one day.

Re: 52 Project

Looks like a good start for sure. The guy who took over building my truck for me is running my heater hoses through the inner fender on the passenger side.

Re: 52 Project

Hart, did you do the floor also? I am going to be doing the front floor pretty soon. Does the hood hinge have any problems where it bolts to the firewall because of the extra thickness? I don't think so because that is the spring side and the hood is pivoted from the cab mounts I believe, but dad was concerned. Also there are two small holes that I am not real sure what they do but are a little lower than the hinge mounts and look like a sheet metal screw was in there...is that for the splash guard? I was going to weld them up and redrill them later. Sorry about the twenty questions, but I am heading down the same path that you have already been down...lol.

Re: 52 Project

Check out http://www.golden-state-parts.com/ch...truckparts.htm
They have them for 47-54 doors. That's where I got mine. Are you using the stock latches? I had problems with my doors popping open sometimes when I hit a bump. I switched to the "bear claw" style with a saftey latch. http://www.julianos.com/bear_claw_door_latches.html
This is NOT a bolt on replacement latch, there is fab work involved. This is, IMO, going to be a nice upgrade.

So far, the only source seems to be to find them used, such as on eBay. I just called Golden State and was told they stopped rebuilding them about a year ago. They only sell hinge pin kits now.

I need a set for the dr side. They both broke at the bolt flanges! Worst case, I may try to fabricate something...

Re: 52 Project

I need to dig around a little but I think we are missing one. The others might be rebuildable but I haven't spent the time to look at them yet. I need to fit the doors before I get to crazy replacing the floor and supports. I will look around this weekend again....hmmmmm must be a round here somewhere?????

Yeah floors are done also. No problems with the hinges. The two small holes are for the splash guard. As far as questions, ask away. I may not have the best answer, but I usually come up with something, LOL!

Re: 52 Project

Hart, You links don't seem to be working properly. It keeps telling me that I don't have premission to view??? Anyway do you have any more shots of things like the radiator and the motor setback? I need to move the motor because I have it set back real far and it would be into the firewall about 3 inches, but we are trying to figure out how much room we are going to need for the radiator. I think he wants to use an electric fan and possible an aluminum radiator. My suggestion is to get a front mount fan and that would free up a couple of inches. Anyway any help would be appreciated. This is my first shot at any of this , but so far so good.

Any luck finding any? If I can find my old ones, I'll send them to you to see if you can make one good set from the two sets. No promises though, sense it's been a while and I don't know where I put them????

Re: 52 Project

I am doing a 51 and put in the same firewall. Could you please tell me what the length of your ford 9 inch is. I want to put on in my truck without doing any modifications to the bed or frame. I have 255 50 R 17 tires for the rear with 17 X 8 wheels and I think a 4.5 inch back space. Does anyone know the best way to measure to get the proper rearend width. Thanks

Re: 52 Project

Bloom, I will have to remeasure it tomorrow when I go down there. If memory serves me right it is 60"...or maybe 62"...Damn CRS. When people talk about rear end width they are talking from axle flange to axle flange. The only reason we went with the 9" is because a buddy of mine gave us the center section. Originally we were going with a 12 bolt because we were going to have to buy a complete unit. I don't know what you are using for power, but I have heard of people using an S-10 rearend and it is almost a direct bolt in.

Here's a great article on installing the firewall.
http://www.webrodder.com/article.php...6&SID=60&CID=7

I found it more helpful than the instructions that came with the kit.

Any more question that I can help you with let me know.

Re: 52 Project

Thanks for the help. I plan on using a 350 chevy engine and 700R4 transmission. I am not sure what kind of horsepower to expect the engine was bored .030 and overhauled before I got it out of a junk yard so I'm not sure whats in it. I would like to you a Ford 9 inch for the rear but not a clue less on what gear ratio to use. The rear wheels are 17 X 8, 255 50 R17. I let you know if I have any other questions. Thanks again

I don't know about the 4ord 9", but with those wheels a 3.27 or 3.73 gear ratio would work good with the 700R4. I'm using the same combo (350/700R4)with the 10 bolt out of my '84 Z/28. A 12 bolt if you wanna run lots of RWHP!

Do you happen to have any pictures of the fuel tank installation? I want to put a tank under the bed and plan on using a roll pan with no rear bumper and hopefully can find one that will tuck up underneath that you won't be able to see from the rear. What are the dimensions of your tank?

Re: 52 Project

I measured the rear end today the best I could and it is 62 inches. We jumped the gun a little and got the housing before deciding on the wheel/tire combo. I think he wants to cut the housing a little, but I told him to settle on the wheel and tires before going to crazy. I got the firewall cleaned up on Friday and it looks great. Now on to the floors and getting the cab mounted so that we can get the motor back in it. Things are progressing slowly but I only have one day a week that I can get down there and mess with it.

Re: 52 Project

If you do cut the housing go over to pyle brothers. they did a nice job on mine. They put ford large housing ends on so I could use the bolt on Explorer disc kit. It was about 400 for the complete disc kit.

Re: 52 Project

We already have the brake set up from Wilwood. I forgot about Pyle Brothers...we got it from Moser and I am guessing that is where he wants to send it back to, but I will suggest them. It is going t obe a while before we get to that again.

Re: 52 Project

I got a little done on the truck today. I installed the fuel tank that we got from CPP. Although it was supposed to be a bolt in, it was only close and will require some rework to get it completely finished. Here is a couple shots.
