Vintage Tools!

I unfortunately broke my old vise so i started looking online and found out my old Parker vise was an antique and a lot older than I thought! Well searching online i found there are forums on old vintage tools, I appreciate tools and know most on this forum do! So lets see what you are using or collecting that is considered an antique or vintage!

Re: Vintage Tools!

Some tools you are better off getting an old high quality set. Like adjustable greenfield tap and die sets. Much higher quality can be found in these for the same price as new junk! Also, the antique larger Prentiss, Columbian, Rockford vises probably cannot be matched or outperformed today. I use the above and have an old Stillson and Rigid pipe wrenches. If you want to be blown away, look at old Oliver woodworking equipment!!

Re: Vintage Tools!

i used this drill press in my shop for many years, very versitile tool could drill thru 2"thick steel easily. my dad figured it was 1880-1890 manufactured//finally retired from service when i got to be 48yo and bad back wouldnt allow for me to crank it any more

the scale under it was what we used to balance pistons and rods on our race engines back in the day

Hey, thanks, Liz!
Yes, Tool Talk is the place to go to discuss old tools, especially wrenches, but we have forums on woodworking tools, blacksmith tools, vintage auto and motorcycle tools, metal working and millwright tools, railroad tools, vintage drills and power tools, and more!

The Tool Talk Forum is at http://www.papawswrench.com/vboard/index.php , or you can find it from Liz's link by clicking on Tool Talk on the front page.

Re: Vintage Tools!

I have some of my Grandpa's and Great Grandpa's hand tools, crank handle wood drill, 3' level and plane, old pipe wrenches, adjustable slip wrench, screw jack, screw driver, admitedly all wood related. I still have a oil canister spout, its the small one not the normal automotive variaty and the only one i have seen thus far.

May not qualify but my dads dad was a butcher and i have all his old butcher knives and all his sunday and malt glasses as his butcher shop was also a corner store with ice cream and soda dispensers ect..

CDowns, Love the old drill press! I have allways been fastenated with old machenery such as lathes, mills ect.. I like the comment about Slonaker being the oldest tool in his shop too!

Re: Vintage Tools!

I have a bunch of my dad's old plumbing tools:

I swear he was the last guy to make the switch from lead and oakum to plastic pipe. I spent my youth tending the lead pot while he made up joints.

Re: Vintage Tools!

Not what you would call a collector, but I do have several from my grandpa's collection. Been meaning to dig them out and ask papawswrench if he could shed any light onto to how old and such the tools are.

My brother has a nearly, if not exactly, the same style drill press. Pretty cool tool. The down ratchet is a really neat feature. He got the "piece of junk" from a farmer friend. Saved it from the scrap pile he did. After much cleaning and oiling, he has a nice antique drill press.

Re: Vintage Tools!

That is nice. Can you tell if the construction of the box is better than one from today?

Re: Vintage Tools!

Thanks - I don't have a newer example to compare with. It's pretty solid - some components have pop rivets. The gold paint looks better in person. I'll wash it and wax it.
