Re: Mopar or no car?

The wrecker isn't a Jeep-based vehicle

The article tells why he saved them, which sounds goofy because the vehicles mentioned would not have ended up in those places. But it doesn't tell why he wasn't selling any. I mean the saving them for later part is here and been here. He had a gold mine of Mopar and was still just sitting on it? I assume he was older, so the realization he wouldn't be restoring and enjoying them all with the time left in his life I am sure crossed his mind. Of course, he did know it would always be a great thing to leave his wife to sell. She is well provided for in his death.

It's not a hoard, it's a collection!

Re: Mopar or no car?

I had 3 friends go for the auction, they said it was a bust. It sounds like some really rough cars went for stupid money.

Around here Mopars Bring REALLY Stupid money all the time. Besides having cheap interiors and a attraction to rust they are extremely expensive to rebuild. They do run like a Scalded Cat but out of my price range to own now.

You are so right, I'm glad I got mine back in 1982 when Mopars were still affordable. This numbers matching, rust free GTX set me back a whopping $1750. You are right about the scalded cat thing too...

Re: Mopar or no car?

I had my share of Mopars in the 60's and 70's Started of with a 67 Barracuda Fastback. My favorite was a Duster 340 six pack. I have always had a soft spot for them, my brother had a 70 Dodge Coronet 383 with 4 speed. But todays prices scare me away. If you could find one the replacement sheet metal is expensive and Motors are extremely high priced to rebuild. Your Car is Beautiful and you did bye it Right. Funny thing is growing up then We thought those Day's would Never End!

Here's how it looked when I bought it on August 4, 1982.

Re: Mopar or no car?

My all time favorite Mopar is the 69 Charger. Had mine way before there was any such thing as the Duke Boys. Sold it when I got married the first time. Picked up a really nice 66 Sport Satellite after that. Cool car, but I should have kept the Charger and driven quickly away ... Hindsight =)

Re: Mopar or no car?

I really REALLY want a 68 charger, but the price is way to much for my blood. If I ever buy one though I will buy one already done up as a Rt clone.

That's a real beauty, Leon! Would it be correct to assume it didn't look like that when you acquired it?

It did look like that. All I had to do was wash it , replace the front wheel cylinders and the under dash wire loom. Here is a picture when I first looked at it.....

Re: Mopar or no car?

I went to high school with a guy that drove a 1969 Barracuda 383. He sold it when he got married. I ran into him a year later and he clearly regretted the move, stating "I am trying to buy it back."

That statement encouraged me to hang onto my 1972 truck and 1975 Pontiac. *I will forever miss the 1988 Honda Accord my parents made me sell.

Re: Mopar or no car?

I have a real soft spot for the old Mopar's. Maybe because I had a 68 Charger R/T when I was 16. I saw the movie Bullitt and had to get one. I loved that car. When the motor finally gave up my mother made me sell it because "It cluttered up the driveway'.

I've always wanted another one. But with the prices on them now. That's not likely.

Leon's Super Bee is beautiful. I had a neighbor that had one just sitting. He was a cranky old guy. I asked if he would sell it. He said he wasn't going to give it away and needed at least $250 for it.

I told my first wife I was going to buy it and she said "No way!. She wouldn't be able to park her POS Nissan Sentra in the garage.

I did buy a 71 Duster 340 years later. It was the really obnoxious green with a black hood. My second wife refused to ride in it. She said it was ugly.

I remember she was giving me a hard time about it and I was fuming mad.

Then my daughter, who was about 6 years old at the time came up and said "Daddy don't worry, I'll ride in your ugly car'

again ,,your one lucky man to own so many very clean nice cars and trucks.. tell your wife I said thanks for being who she is to let you own so many ..and we get to see them from time to time..

Smile Re: Mopar or no car?

I always liked the Mopars but almost all of them were rattle traps.
On the street or track tho'....cubic inch for inch they were almost impossible to beat.
A stock 340 would usually and easily eat the 350's for lunch.

The '68 Charger has to be one of the best looking muscle cars ever made....actually that whole '68 to '70 charger group.
A buddy of mine has a '68 Charger RT and that car collects looks like rainwater.....beautiful cool car.

These Auctions are a bit of a farce tho'....I think really smart buyers would know this is the last place to probably buy a reasonably priced collector car.
Look what happened at the Lambrecht auction a few years ago....not that there weren't a few key, valuable vehicles but $10k+ for a lot of seriously rusted field trucks, go figure.

All good

Re: Mopar or no car?

My dad sold new dodge plymouth chryslers through the 60’s. I remember a few choice muscle cars he sold. One in particular was a 65 coronet with hemi 4 speed he ordered for a guy fresh out of the service. Dad took me for a ride in it. I wont ever forget it. The tires at the time were narrow 6.95/14 or something like that as there werent any “wide” tires yet. That hemi smoked em easily in 3 gears. Yeah it made quite the impression on this kid.

Re: Mopar or no car?

if you are talking Mopar, this is my wife's car, a 1957 Chrysler 300c it had been sitting in her family's barn for the last 20-30 years. Her father bought in in 1960, it has a 392 hemi with a push button tranny. It has taken me a year of constant work but its now on the road. My Wife learned to drive in this car in 1972 and its nice for her to have some of her family history back in her hands

It sure is nice to get them complete and unmolested. Nice looking car and good job on the restoration.

Re: Mopar or no car?

Like that Chrysler 300, great looking ride. Nice to have such a rememberance from the family over the years.

Reminds me of the '57 Chrysler Imperial my folks had when I was a youngster. Not sure what engine it had but it would sure roll and felt like sitting on the living room sofa at 80 mph! Also had the 3 speed push button shift, Dad called it his 3 speed typewriter.
