250 Chevy cracked block- what would you salvage?

A few weeks ago, I bought a complete 250 engine really cheap so I could use the p.s. pump, pulleys, fan and mounting brackets. When I dismantled it I found very little wear on the cylinder walls and the head looked decent so I took them in to have the machinist check them over. He found the block is cracked so it's basically junk and he'll let me know about the head next week.

I'm going to chunk the block on the scrap pile for the metal yard and I've taken all the external stuff off like oil pan, lifter covers, timing chain cover, points distributor, alternator, starter, etc. The machinist said the only thing he would keep from the block is the crank.

Anything else y'all think might be good to keep?

If you are in need of a block, there is a 230 block that just was listed in the '60-'66 classifieds.

Re: 250 Chevy cracked block- what would you salvage?

Actually, I already have a good running 250 engine in my 68. I bought this one for the p.s mounting brackets, pump, pulleys and fan which were all good. I have power steering in my truck but the brackets are from different year vehicles and don't quite line up correctly.

I'm chunking the block and I'll just keep what I've taken out just in case I can use them at some later time.

Thanks.

I'd save the head too. Always nice to have a spare.

Yeah, I have the head in the shop right now having it checked out. The crank looks like it might need to be turned slightly and might be a good one to keep as a spare also. Never know.
