MSD DIS-4 Plus

Well, crud. I got this thing in some parts that came w/ a project truck a good while back. I had no idea exactly what it was, but thought maybe it was just an older version of a 6AL box.

Wrong.

So, anybody know exactly what this would control? Web searches make it seem like a version of a 6AL, but for coil packs? Does it work on the 5.3's? I'm assuming it's useless for the carbed 350 in my Cheyenne.

Re: MSD DIS-4 Plus

It is a high output digital ignition. Mostly used on blown or turbo motors to keep them lit. They are expensive. I would sell it and get a digital 6 for your truck.

Re: MSD DIS-4 Plus

Thanks for the info. Yikes- that is a steep price!

I did some research in to it earlier. I opened up one end & checked. The electronics are not "potted", so even if it didn't work, there's a good chance I could send it to MSD for a relatively cheap repair. ("Potted", it turns out, means encased in goo. LOL)

Guess I'll have to buy a 6AL. That's the way it usually works out: get something cool & expensive, but useless for your situation.

Don't completely dismiss an original HEI, with or without an aftermarket module in it. I think it's good enough that it costs a lot more to get a small improvement over stock HEI. But a 6AL sure looks good under the hood...

Re: MSD DIS-4 Plus

It actually has nothing to do with looks or out performing HEI. My Cheyenne has an Accel HEI Super on it & it works great.

My reason for the 6AL is because I'm doing a 4L60e swap & using a TCI EZ-TCU trans controller. It should be here tomorrow. It needs a good tach signal to operate. In some cases, the tach hook-up in the HEI dizzy is too "dirty" of a signal for the TCU to get an accurate reading off of. A better option is a box like the 6AL with a dedicated tach output wire.
