Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build

We have looked and looked for a stainless steel fuel tank and nothing really got us excited enough to pay for it so we decided we will build our own.

So we built a profile buck and will start rolling steel immediately.

We estimate over 25 gallons

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build

As big of a weekend as we have had yet. Chassis is finally off the fixture.

Back in August when we purchased this truck we made the forecast of having the chassis as a roller by mid Dec. Well we missed that by 2 days.

Some of the final stuff we did was fabricating mounts for the sway bar. (Boxing a frame does bring in some head scratching.

It is nice to be out of the fabrication side of the shop and moving over to the assembly side, even if it is just to mock the truck up.

3 months of work to get here, not terrible considering we both have day jobs that require way too much time away from the build.

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build

So what we were shooting for was to get the truck fully mocked up as a roller to finalize the bed and cab mounts. To do that we needed to align and bolt down the cab solid.

All and all a fantastic weekend and a real successful mock up to date.

My two favorite pictures of this weekend.

Wow Robert you guys DID make some serious progress this weekend. Such good work, I'm thoroughly impressed with how it's turning out!!!

That power plant looks so mean mounted up. What color does Greg want to PC the frame?

What are you guys planning for a wiring harness? I need some ideas on how to clean up the boy's truck, I'm OCD'ing on all the wires in his engine compartment.

Greg picked a color called anthracite It is sort of a grey/silver. Should offer some nice contrast to the black parts and the dark brite stuff too.

We will be using a master kit from American Auto Wire. Already bought it. Nearly 600 bucks but it is very well done and seems to have everything we will need and then some.

We are roughing in the bed today. Pretty interesting process. we came up with, all new structure to mimic factory but with modern DOM steel rectangular tube.

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build

One down side to moving the chassis off the frame fixture is we no longer have our benchmarks to build off of. So we broke out the jack stands and leveled the frame using shim stock to withing a tenth of a degree then broke out the laser and set the body lines to as close to perfect as we can.

Size: 61.8 KB

we are raising the bed floor just under 6 inches and will be using all new 3" x " 1 .120" wall DOM steel for all the new cross-members

Yea well this forum does not generate much chatter anyway.

I'll take a while off. Sitting down here and uploading photos is time better spent actually working on Greg's Truck.

I let this thread fall to the bottom of the forum.

Robert, I am as bad as the rest of the Stalkers on this Thread! No there isn't a Lot of Chatter but you have a average of 43 views per post. If the other Viewers are like me I am in Total Awe of the work and Craftsmanship you are putting into this build. I can't compare my work to yours so I reallycan't criticize your work only ADMIRE IT! Keep up the Great Job your doing and throw a Bone to us once in a While

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build

To all of you guy's who are following along we really appreciate all comments and feedback. This is my first build and without Robert at the helm this truck would take ten times longer and would turn out half as nice. The experience and technical ability Robert brings to the table has made this build the experience of a lifetime for me and theres no way I would have attempted it without him. We have been busting our butts to meet self imposed deadlines and couldn't be happier with our progress so far. Again thanks to all who have input, we have learned a few things on this forum and will continue to participate.

Northern85 I REALLY like your truck and am looking forward to your build!

I have been Drooling over the truck build and the shop, what type of paint did you put on the floors? I am building a new shop this spring and really like the’ way your shop floor looks.

It is a 3 stage epoxy from Kelly Moore.
