tremec trans

Hey all. Ive been looking for a 5 speed trans for my truck for a while. So, Ive found a guy with a tremec 5 sp for a reasonable price. Says its never been in a car. After talking to him he says it will bolt up to a mustang bellhousing yet in his ad he says will bolt up to certain camaros. If it bolts to mustangs what camaro could it fit? Ive got a 67 step w/a 292 inline.Any info is greatly appreciated. Muley

I'm not a fab guy, there is a thread on here of someone putting a NV4500 (from a Dodge if I remember) behind a Chevy motor. So I'm pretty sure you could modify the stock bell housing to mate up. Having said that, if you're not a fab guy, I know for a fact that Tremec has bell housings for Chevy i6's.

third gen Camaro 82-92 is what the guy ws talking about but they use hydraulic clutch. there is a guy on here who makes an awesome bolt in hydro clutch set up for these trucks. or you can modify the stock bellhousing as long as the input shafts are the same length

TREMEC makes 2 different aftermarket 5 speeds, in 2 different configurations, and 2 different input shaft setups. They also make multiple OEM transmissions for many different cars. Which TREMEC is it?

If its a TKO500 or TKO600, it can be configured for a Ford or a GM. GM version is a different input shaft than Ford, and I believe a different bell housing bolt pattern.

If it is a GM version, it will bolt directly to any bell housing that fits a Muncie car 4-speed. It will also bolt directly to an older bell housing for a truck saginaw with the smaller input bearing retainer. For a bell for the later saginaw or others with the larger input bearing retainer, you can get an adapter ring made to make it fit (thats what I did).

You will need a later clutch with the fine spline count for the later input shafts.

That's a Ford transmission. Wrong input shaft for a GM motor. Tremec DID, however, make a version for the 90's camaros but the bolt pattern on that trans is NOT compatible with a mustang bellhousing. Keep looking! Plenty on flea bay $400-$700.

Tremecs are tough, but big and heavy. In some older vehicles, you have to trim the trans hump in the floor for clearance.

There are plenty of 5-speeds out there that will bolt up to a Chevy bellhousing. A Borg Warner T5 from an S10 was designed to handle torque from a 4.3L V-6, so it would work well with your 292. Muncie and B-W 4-speeds will also bolt up, and are even cheaper. You can buy a 100% new Muncie for around $1800 (last I checked) with better than OEM case and gears. Just don't pick one with a 2.20:1 first gear!

Yup. Big and heavy. like this on on the back of an LS motor. Both LS and T5 rest quite comfortably in a Mazda Miata so they are obviously way too large for a TRUCK!

I guess it's all relative.
Compared to my RFE545 it's small and light.
Compared to the Muncie M21/M22 4 speed, it's big and heavy.

That Mazda should get around pretty good. Is that a stock tranny hump?

Tranny hump is stock and shifter comes through in the stock location. The iron mazda four/four speed combo is the same length as the LS/T5 combo except T5's tailshaft is much longer so a custom driveshaft 7 inches shorter is required. The same iron chunks are within 50 LBS of the new stuff so weight distribution is the same. New cam, L92 heads, and 1.7:1 rockers boost HP to just over 500 at the flywheel so it does get around pretty good. Remember that AC Ace that Carroll Shelby stuffed a Ford FE 427 into???? This has about the same HP and is 50 pounds lighter than his comp 427 cobra and that was a Ferrari killer.

That's a T56, not a T5. Right?

I had a built LS6/T-56 in my Mazda RX-7 (88 10th Anniversary) Loved that car, thing ripped.

I'm in the process of a T5 swap. 86 NWC Camaro box and gears with a 10-spline Jeep input shaft and s10 tail housing. No box - bell spacer required with the jeep IS. Lugnutz65 has an awesome website with a LOT of information on the T5. Very helpful fella as well.
