59 gmc 4x4
Has anyone put a gm 10 bolt front axle in a 55-59 pickup? If so, what did you use for a steering box, pitman arm, steering link? I do fabricate.

Yrs ago I helped a bud do this. We found the stock frame / springs / steering wasn't up to the job & wound up peeling all the sheetmetal off & installing it on a late '60s Dodge 4x4 frame.

I wonder if/how knapco modified the frame, steering, or suspension. Certainly rough use --mudding, rock crawling-- would put additional stress. Maybe boxing the frame at the hanger points and steering box would help. I do like puzzles within dollar means. I am hung up on trucks especially 4wds.

The same bud had a NAPCO '57, but it didn't run & I never looked very close under it.

I have the remnants of the front end of a '59 someone converted to 4x4. Seemed to do fine.
They used the stock steering linkage from a push/pull manual steering set-up on the axle. It wasn't a cross-steer set-up. Granny 4-speed with a married transfer case (I still have that). Leaf springs were stock, I believe. They had the grease fittings on the shackles. Not sure what steering box was on the truck--I didn't get that when they put a new chassis under it. BUT, I don't see why a later power steering box (push-pull variety) wouldn't work, with the proper adapter plate. If you've got a '59 4x4, there's a junkyard local to me that has a '59 Commercial grill that I always thought would look tough as hell on a 4x4. -Brad

Brad54 ---- If the commercial grill is a fleet pickup -- that is what i have -- 1/2 ton step side with the chevy dash with gmc on it, a 270 motor, single headlights and the funny grill . At the moment in mostly pieces but I have all but the passenger door. 8-)

Yup, that's the grill! The one in the boneyard here is a fleet truck, but it's got the regular GMC dual headlights.
I honestly don't know what trans and T-case it is. I need to go look. I've been meaning to take a pic and post it here to identify it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. -Brad

Hey guys, I have a WTB in that forum for a stock steering arm for a GM 10 bolt or dana 44. You guys that lifted your 4x4's probably have one lying around that you replaced to correct turning. Help me out please.
