28 spline vs 31 spline ?

I,m just doing a ford 9 in. for my truck with a 454 450 hp and plan on running about a 4;11 gear ratio, but looking at my options and was wondering why the 28 spline is not a good choice to run, is only 3 teeth.I can find a 28 sline posi but then I need the gears and someone to set it up, or I found a 4;11 posi drop out with 31 splines but then I have to buy axles.

Re: 28 spline vs 31 spline ?

The 31 spline will be stronger. How much? Who's to say if they are stock axles. If you plan to ever hit the track with it, I would not run any less than 35 spline. A lot of body damage when the axle snaps and you take out the tree, or hit the wall. If just for the street, I would still lean towards the 31 spline. One good burnout, and one side hooks hard when you let out of the gas, and you can snap an axle as well. Paul Baxter

31 is much stronger then 28. Yes only 3 splines but that is a bunch more contact area. I have Currie Forged Alloy 31 splines and feel real good with them.

Good choice, I think you will be happy with your present combination, and most importantly safe!
