Rear end help
Hey Guys (and Gals)!
I am looking to rebuild (stock) the rear-end of my '75 Scottsdale. It's a one-ton, eight-lug Camper Special with a 454, automatic. Any help, guidance, and direction is massively appreciated! I have work experience with Chevy vehicles, so I understand most procedures. However, I'm 67, (), so would I benefit from a professional doing this instead? Thanks! Wayne |

Re: Rear end help
1st..need to determine which axle you have ...2nd..if you've never rebuilt a axle it can be a hair pulling experience to get the setup right...a pro is a good choice...what is exactly wrong with the rear?...you may be money ahead to try and find a replacement axle...you can sink a bundle in a rebuild if you start replacing everything

Here is a photo of the rear end. It has 14 bolts on the cover. One mech said the seals are bad. Fact is, the truck is 44 years old, so I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt to rebuild. There is some grease being thrown out the front of the rear end. Note marks of left shock and exhaust pipes. I was also told it would be $700-800 to do (to repair seals). I see no axle grease running down the tires so I think those bearings are still okay. I know this rear has another set of seals inside near the third member. Thanks for your input! Re: Rear end help
I have no idea if I accidentally sent a partial reply.
Anyway, thanks for all the good, useful info! I'm assuming I can do all this without removing the entire rear axle housing. I figure the axles have C clips? and what about the pinion seal (I think that's shot) ...and might as well replace all bearings? That's two bearings per axle + seals, and a pinion bearing & seal? I've got a 1975 CD C10-20-30 manual, do you think I can put seals and bearings in using that, without a major deal? (For all the wise guys: I know, I'll need wrenches, screwdriver, and other hand tools) Thanks again for all the helpful info! Wayne |

Re: Rear end help
You should have a full floater...no c clips...the axles bolt to the outer hub..don't even have to pull the tires off...remove the bolts and the axles will slide out...but if you dont have anything leaking around the rear tires I wouldnt mess with those...it looks like all you need is a pinion seal from your pic...mark the yoke nut and the yoke with something that wont wipe off...remove the nut counting the turns..remove the yoke..pop the seal out put new seal back in reinstall the yoke and nut. Counting the turns back on...the pinion bearing are preloaded with the pinion nut ...
But before you do anything check the pinion shaft for play...if theres play itll have to be rebuilt..

Re: Rear end help
the rear is a full floater as said no c-clips .
the bearings are oil bath from the gear oil . unless they look bad leave them alone . there NOT grease packed . when its all back together tip / jack up 1 side for a few min to let oil go in the hub from the diff . do the same for the other side for a few min . check oil level and top off as needed 80-90 w oil . road test and let cool and recheck oil again to be sure . the wheel seals = pulling the hub & drum as one unit to get to the seal . if the spindle surface of the axle is groved then dont bother with speedi-sleave repair kit . just use the newer seals like this # from skf 28635 its for like a 02 or 03 2500 or 3500 with the newer version of this axle . its seal on a seal so no more seal spinning on axle with worn surface . and its cheeper than the repair sleaves . the pinion seal is not bad but the yoke is pressed on the pinion splines so its not just a pull off by hand thing to change . the crush sleave is in there and there supost to be used 1 time but if you know how it works you can re use it . or swap to a solid spacer kit but they take a bit to step up . but there nice after that . if any question just ask we can help you out .

Re: Rear end help
If I'm only replacing the pinion seal, how do I pull the yoke off?
Gear puller? What type? I have several types. Or is it a press off and press on? I assume a press on and off means I have to pull the axles enough to release the gear unit. Then pull the unit out and have it pressed off? I want to thank all you guys who have shared the information to educate me! Wayne |

Re: Rear end help
not a factory posi .
it would be a lunchbox locker unit like a powertrax / lock-right/along these lines yes . remove spider gears and washers and install this unit and its a locker but works good around corners if your not on the power to hard . otherwise its a whole carrier swap over .
