Re: Halfbreed - GMC Z71 + IH Extd Cab

OK 4th time was a charm on the roof. This morning I cut it back open and tried one last thing... and it worked mucho better!

I started by setting the peak of the center arc of the roof with a brace all the way up from something solid (the floor) instead of the flexy truss I had hanging from the doorway frames before. This got me (again) the arc I wanted. Then I tacked in a backer plate to give the entire center of the roof some beef.

Re: Halfbreed - GMC Z71 + IH Extd Cab

Next I trimmed off the side feathers and tacked as I went. Starting from the front and working rearward - alternating both sides.

This got me what I was looking for. I am satisfied (finally) with my DIY bodywork. The rooflines are really important because when I lower the suspension the roof is going to be right at eye level.

I (or a good bodyman) still have some work along the back, but the steps I took finally got me the "shell" shape I was looking for.

Then I picked up all my fab stuff, blew a bunch of dust out of the shop and out of my nose, took a break and then:

Installed the battery and turned on the key. Got some idiot lights. The chicken was pretty excited at this point.

Re: Halfbreed - GMC Z71 + IH Extd Cab

The only problem I had turned out to be a little deal with the shift cable attachment bracket down on the side of the tranny. The PO had put some tie wraps to hold the shift cable and I had to do the same. Once I got this stable then the truck knew it was in P and it....

FIRED RIGHT THE FRICK UP!!!

Re: Halfbreed - GMC Z71 + IH Extd Cab

Halfbreed is back under it's own power boys. I drove it outside into the sun for the first time in 2 or 3 months. (Have to go back and figure out when did I last move it.)

The truck is a truck under it's own right now. Enjoy the glamor shots I took!

Edit: It was 2 months and 1 week ago that I started sawing up the GMC cab so that was the last time the chassis was outside under power.

Thanks for all the compliments. But remember that is not my total time on the project. 2+ months is just how long the chassis was down. My total time since I started the demo of the 1st IH truck has been 6.5 months.

I'll still take the credit though!

Now I have to find a GM radiator for the truck. Time to hit a SoCal pick and pull (or whatever they call them down here).

Re: Halfbreed - GMC Z71 + IH Extd Cab

The jury is still out on whether this will end up being a cool looking truck like my dream photo chops look. But - it sure is starting to look like the "engineering" sketch.

Re: Halfbreed - GMC Z71 + IH Extd Cab

Yesterday eve I sort of down-shifted and started figuring out what to do next. I didn't hang the front doors - just sat them in on some shims. But the day for re-hanging them is coming soon. First I want to throw some more metal up into the cowl/firewall area to make sure it can take the weight of the doors.

But still it felt great to see the doors looking like they were in!

I also took an inventory of what metal thicknesses I am going to need to finish up the cab floor, body mount brackets and cowl/firewall. Then I looked at what I have saved/scavenged and started sketching up what I'm going to do for gussets and surface metal.

Today I found a radiator for the truck and tonight after work I put it in.

PS: I'm about to run out of my first bottle of MIG gas. Must be a weekend coming up!

Re: Halfbreed - GMC Z71 + IH Extd Cab

Friday afternoon/eve I started filling in the rear section of the floor, but I can't find the pictures to prove it... (CRS example #1). All I know is by bedtime I felt like crap and had done a lot of welding without much to prove it.

Sat AM I had CRS example #2 - had to go shopping 2 places to get ready for the next wave of tasks on the truck. Got out of my Burb at store #1 and realized my wallet was back at the house.... $^*&^*&^)(*)(*)

Anyway... after that humble start to the day I DID rally and regain my self-respect.

First I added some gussets up in the cowl before hanging the front doors.

Next I cleaned up the hinges and bolts, then re-hung the doors. Not going to win any shows but the PS is "perfect" and the DS would be except the hinges are more worn and therefore it droops slightly no matter what. For now it is GTG.

Then I did a quick grind-off on all my door threshold area welds and wiped them down and primered them.

Re: Halfbreed - GMC Z71 + IH Extd Cab

Intermixed with the door hanging I was filling the radiator with coolant and trying to "burp" the air out of the loop. I took the truck off the blocks and moved it outside and waited while it warmed up and the thermostat opened up.... then had a bunch of s*** happen but eventually got the air out of the loop and now I have a real truck that really runs (all the time) and stays cool. (That is what the second photo is supposed to show is the temp gage is at normal.)

Re: Halfbreed - GMC Z71 + IH Extd Cab

Next I did what all red-blooded, American bred hot-rodders do with their embryonic rides....

I gave the truck a sponge bath.

Yes the phrase "sponge bath" is automatically gay but... that's the best I could do for now. I just had to "pamper" the truck somehow and there was still some Oregon slime clinging to the sides.

Anyhoo got that all out of my system.
