Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

71/72 front suspension with 71/72 style (ball joint) 2.5" drop disc brake spindles from ECE.

The truck currently has +/-13" long front brake hoses. With the spindles dropped down the hose now wants to "rest" against the upper ball joint threads (on the bottom side) Not something I see going very well over time with suspension movement and turns. I could also just barely get the calipers back on without stretching the hose.

Does anyone make a longer 14-15" brake hose for these trucks? You have to order just about everything now a days and i want to get this right without having to order hoses 5 different times.

Thanks!

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

Another option is to have hoses made to length. The local NAPA here makes hydraulic hoses of pretty much any kind with any fitting made to order. They can usually bang them out in a day.

Can't remember right off but I do know it was 2" longer than stock. They are tight still though.

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

Wow, so maybe I need 16"?

I can't be the only one with this issue, it seems 5 people a day drop their trucks... has anyone found a stock "off the shelf" solution? I don't mind custom ordering something, but prefer off the shelf stuff.

15 years ago I dropped my truck with 21/2 spindels and had no problems using the stock out of the box brake lines and had no problems for the 75000 miles that I put on the truck over a five year period

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

I wish I had the ones you had, but the stock off the shelf 71/72 hoses I have are rubbing on the upper ball joint threads that stick down.

I wonder if different aftermarket companies made different length hoses? If so, what was the "stock length" supposed to be?

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

Jesse i just went through this with mine. The otc hoses from oreillys ran right up against the upper ball joint mount. Since the caliper end of the hose is steel i just put it in the vise and bent them just enough to clear. I may have a pic or two. I just bent them down and to the rear very little to get enough clearance.

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

67ChevyRedneck,

I'm with you and searched for an OEM solution when my stock replacement lines were too short.

I think the stock lines are 12.25". I found lines for a 1974 Caprice that had the right threads and banjo that are 15.25". I have them on my truck now, but would say they are about 1" too long because they make contact with the spindle.

I am just getting my truck back on the road after an 8+ year sit from the PO. So this was just a solution to get the vehicle moving. I'm not sure this is my final decision.

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

According to txfirefighter you can use off the shelf hoses from a 71-72 C-20 as they are longer than the ones used on a C-10.

1971-1972 3/4 Ton or 1 ton brake hoses. I just did this swap the other day. Plenty of slack in the hose now.

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

Sweet! Now that's the kind of info I was looking for! The caprice option sounds good too.

You guys are all so awesome! I knew something would come up!

My search skills suck, but I thought it odd I didn't find any other threads on this... but when you use words like "drop spindle" you get 5,000 threads on anything and everything.

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

If you get the 71-72 3/4 ton hoses you can cut the nubs off and the you can position the hose so it gives you maximum length. It isn't necessary, but I thought it looked funny with the nubs not sitting in the giving slot on the caliper.

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

This is odd... none of the local chains carry C20 hoses, not napa, oreilly, adv, or the zone... not in stock OR online. Not even a part listed. All of em have C10 hoses...

Where is everyone else getting theirs from?

Also, Scott, in your pic above... is one hose for one side longer than the other? Or is that just an illusion with the pic?

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

The short one on the right is the old hose and the longer ones are the 3/4 ton. I ended up buying my hoses from LMC, they are about 30 minutes from me. None of the chain stores carry the hose. Surprised that NAPA doesn't cater to us old truck fanatics.

Yeah, that kinda sucks.

I meant that the one on the far right looks shorter than the one in the middle (the two new looking ones.)

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

These trucks are so old most parts houses dont stock a lot of parts for them anymore. But many can have them overnight. I bought both the front hoses and the rear one for mine at oreillys.

When you modify you have to be ready to think out side the normal box. You will have to get creative on some stuff and other stuff will fall right into place.
A good set of S/S brake lines should last you for ever. Buy them one time oh and while your at it get the back one to!

I got to looking at that picture again and it does appear that the two new ones are different, but they are the exact same length.

Picture of the problem? I just installed the lines and spindles from POL on my truck and everything seems long enough. Maybe it's a 67 thing, do you hardliners run on the backside or front side of the crossmember?

Re: Front brake hoses too short for 2.5" drop spindles?

Here are some pictures of mine. From top to bottom: wheel straight, full lock left, full lock right. I put a half twist in the line so that it will coil around and rest against the spindle. I don't have any binding or stretching issues. My POL lines are measuring around 15" in length.

I have a 71 suspension, cross member and all, under my 67. The hoses mount in front. Didn't take pics. I pulled it apart for the rebuild. So the problem may be isolated to 71+ trucks or guys with 71+ cross members.

Same here also. I have a 1971 and the brake lines run in front of the crossmember. If you get those hoses you'll be set. I ran my stock hoses for awhile, but I wasn't comfortable knowing they were getting stretched every time I made a full turn of the wheel. Actually they were so tight that one of my hoses came off the right front caliper. Oddly I still had brakes, but was running manual brakes at the time.

My hardlines and hoses mount on the back of the crossmember on my 70.
