Water Pump long or short
Here it comes...and I am waiting for Bill Engvall to scream..."Here's your sign."
What is the physical difference in a long or short water pump and how do I tell what I have? Wow...that was painful...but I just do not get it. Thanks, Tim

Re: Water Pump long or short
the back of a short pump will be super close to the timing cover
the long punp sits about 1 inch off of timing cover

Re: Water Pump long or short
Quick way to tell is stick your hand down between the timing chain cover & water pump...if you can get your fingers in there it's a long pump, if not it's a short pump.

Re: Water Pump long or short
OK...I can stick my fingers in there...not far cause I have fat fingers...
So if I have a long water pump what does that mean...other than it is long? Tim

Re: Water Pump long or short
Long pumps were installed on pickups starting in 73. Major difference in pulleys and brackets, it can be a real pain converting one. There is a small difference in water flow, the long pump being better, but not enough to make conversion worthwhile.
This might help you determine which you have.
