nv3500 nv4500 ?

how can u tell the difference in these two trans by looking at them ? i have a 89 with a 5 speed in it and it has held up to a 454 for some time now with no problems according to the previous owner. if it's a 4500 i'm probably gonna run it but if its a 3500 i plan to go turbo 400hd with the new 454. the truck came out with a 4.3 and the 5 speed but from what i've read the 3500's are pretty weak and i know the previous owner treated it fairly rough and it's held up.

the 3500's have an integral bellhousing and are all aluminum. The 4500's are cast iron with a removable bell.
