68 c20 DRW stakebody

Picking up this 68 c20 DRW stakebody next week and will see it in person tomorrow. Any information on these is appreciated. Saw another board member has one

Very cool! I think this is only the fourth one I have ever known of. slomotion's '68 was the first I ever saw. My friend had a GMC C2500 DRW. I wish I could have ended up with that

Very rare factory option indeed. It also appears to have the factory supplied flatbed on it.
Built in the day when you went down the "Menu" and checked the boxes of what you wanted. Please post more pic's when you get it home.

It's my understanding that farmers wanted the DRW for a larger foot print on softer ground. Either way that truck is very worthy of a full blown top notch restoration IMHO.

truck has been kept together and has had rockers, cab corners and paint at some point
SPID was there fortunately and has the "DR wheel conversion" package
I will be doing any roadworthy repairs and driving it this spring

also, what was standard differential ratio for 250/sm465 in a c20? 4.56? theres nothing on fhr spid

I'm anxious to see more pictures! Never thought the dual wheels were a factory option on trailing arm, 3/4 ton trucks.

It was one of those year specific things, '63-'68 only.

My friend's GMC C2500 DRW was a 69/70. This is the only picture I have on my computer. It was medium olive poly originally, which became available in '70

any chance it had the stake body on it.
I am trying to figure out how to align the stake body on thos truck. its currently touching the cab and it doesn't look like its the factory position

That's a POV [Personaly Owned Vehicle] base sticker. So that truck was not Gov't Property, but belonged to an Officer. An enlisted man's sticker would have been Red. Also a Navy-owned truck would be battleship gray. A light blue like that was on Air Force trucks.
However the DOD bought many trucks with L6 250s and always with manual transmissions. [Except, maybe the Air Force.]
It was issued by the FIRST NAVAL DISTRICT -- whatever that is. It expired 2/1981.

In JUN/73, I bought my '68 C/10 Stepside from an ex-Army Sgt, who'd bought the truck from a Navy Captain [Catholic chaplain at MCB Camp Pendleton]. So it had a Blue base sticker win a Captain's Eagle rank [0-6]. The sticker should have been removed by MPs.
In DEC/73 I went into Marine boot camp. A year later, after A-school and home leave, I ran the truck to my next duty station at MCAS Cherry Point, NC. The first three times I rolled back on base after getting snappy salutes from the MP on gate guard. The next time, the Sgt said, ''My compliments to your father, the Colonel''. [I was a PFC.] I replied my father was a civilian.
''Thought so,'' said the Sgt, ''Pull to the right.'' And he scraped off my blue sticker and stuck on a red one. I got a lecture about Impersonating an Officer. I said I was a civilian when I bought a used truck, and had no idea what the blue decal on the bumper was. He didn't press the issue. No more salutes.

Later at Cherry Point, I got permission to go down to Motor Pool and get qualified on CUCVs [Civilian Utility Commercial Vehicles], the military designation for their '67-'72 Chevy and GMC trucks. A Corporal driver/instructor rode shotgun with me as I checked out a Battleship Gray '67 C/10 Stepside shortbed with 250 L6 and 3-on-the-tree tranny. I had been driving my own Orange '68 C/10 short Stepside [w/292/SM465] -- bought in California -- for over a year. I had even driven it Coast to Coast, so I felt confident operating the truck.
My style -- learned in the Hollywood Hills, of double clutching and revving up to catch the next lower gear when coming around a corner -- did not amuse the CPL. ''Don't be hotrodding my truck, PFC,'' he shouted.
But I got the certification, anyway, with an admonition not to abuse Gov't Property in the future.

A Marine buddy of mine had a '68 GMC Dually stakebed, but I thought it was a C/3500 -- one ton. I'll ask him what his rear end gears were. He sold the truck since.

[EDIT] OK. He got back to me: It was a one ton [C/3500] with a 351 V6 and New Process 4-speed, and No Spin rear. He did not recall the final drive ratio.
