The problem is that this crazy old man missed a shift @ 7200, & munched a syncro, slider, & most likely the dog teeth on the gear. Richmond has changed hands, & parts have not been available... (the problem) The old truck is short on paint & interior, but still gets a lot of "thumbs up" when she is out cruzing. Sure. I would like to see some pics. But then who on this site would not? Not to hijack, but has anyone got any experience with Doug Nash trannies? I was wondering how the 4+3 held up in Corvettes. One is for sale locally.

I dont know much about that trans....but Doug , got a bad rap about customer service. Richmond took over, after that.....I guess, that I would think about parts available? And /or talk with guys that have used them No issues on the talk......we all learn from the the deal Longhorn

I had always heard Richmond's were good trannies. My M22 never skipped a beat. I guess I will end up in the same place we all started. Muncie.

Don't waste time and money on the DN 4+3 Richmond still makes service parts for the DN and later Richmond transmissions. Go to Summit website and type Richmond transmission parts into search bar.

Re: Thoughts on a new supe rcase muncieM22/wide ratio

I finally decided to go for it. I already switched the rear end to a 3.08 and if all goes well my new m22z will arrive from Paul at 5speeds.com some time next week. Im so excited that I feel like a little kid who's parents are gonna take him to Disneyland.

Re: Thoughts on a new supe rcase muncieM22/wide ratio

What did you go with for gearing? I found a local Muncie for $400 but needs a synchro. I thought I will shelve it till I figure out what I want to do with it. Maybe an overdrive gearset... That's why I ask.

Re: Thoughts on a new supe rcase muncieM22/wide ratio

1st-2.98
2nd-2.04
3rd-1.47
4th-1.0
Rear end is 3.08 gives me a launch ratio of 9.178. I'm hoping that works out well for an all around driver with 28" tires. If it seems sluggish off the line I'll go down a tire size next time I get new ones.

Re: Thoughts on a new supe rcase muncieM22/wide ratio

I had stock gears (I guess 3.08) in my 66 Chevelle with a rock crusher and a pumped 350 and that thing was unstoppable.

Interested in hearing your review. I put one in a 69 Camaro with a stroked 396 (427 with small bore) and some 3.08's in the rear. With the big block torque, the trans was awesome accelerating and easy on the highway.

Re: Thoughts on a new supe rcase muncieM22/wide ratio

Woulda been nice to have that gear set back in the day!
I ran an m22 with 2.73, 3.08 and 3.31 gears. Two were LS6 chevelle’s. One a L34.
You had to learn to finesse that clutch just right.
You couldn’t always just wind it up and sidestep the pedal in 3rd. LOL!
On the plus side, I learned a lot about clutches, trans ratios and rear gears.

Re: Thoughts on a new supe rcase muncieM22/wide ratio

I will certainly report back here when i get it going. Paul at 5speeds has been hung up for months waiting for Autogear to cast the parts. I talked to a nice gal at 5speeds on Friday who assured me that Paul is a very conscientious man and he is quite upset about the delays in manufacturing. She also told me that my build was on the bench and that it looked as though the anticipated parts had finally arrived.
I went thru a similar problem trying to buy two stock type 5 lug steel wheels once thru Jegg's. They were forever waiting on Wheel Vintiques to make them and my arrival date kept get bumped forward. After 3 months I tried Amazon instead only to receive notice from their vendor saying the same as Jegg's. Ultimately I located them in stock at Summit.
I've been patiently waiting for this Muncie for months now too and as a buisnessman myself I can empathize with Paul's frustration. He has a stellar reputation so I've chosen to simply be patient and remain pleasant to deal with. Re-installing my Saginaw has not been an option since I sent Paul my Hurst shifter because he's going to set it up on the new tranny with the proper linkage. At least I've still had my longbed stocker to cruise around in the meantime. I guess made in USA means it's gonna take a while these days. Oh and by the way, i just went thru this again trying to order an American made garden hose (Gilmour brand) from Ace Hardware. Two months later I gave up and went to Lowe's and bought a different one.

Re: Thoughts on a new supe rcase muncieM22/wide ratio

Hooray, it's here. Paul rebuilt my old Hurst shifter from the Saginaw and has it pre-installed on the Muncie. It looks great and even came with 2 quarts of oil and grade 8 bolts to mount up with. Hopefully I'll get a chance to get it done this weekend.

Awesome! I can't wait to hear the review and please post a video of you rowing those gears.

Re: Thoughts on a new supe rcase muncieM22/wide ratio

The install went smoothly. Pretty much filled the same footprint as the old Saginaw. The main difference is the gear shifter has a tad bit wider throw so I need to elongate the hole in the floor. Lately we've been suffering a butal heatwave so it's like 115 degrees in the garage after I get off work. Hopefully this weekend I'll get out early, pull the passenger seat, lay back the carpet, and get it done. I did one test drive and it was great, the whine was noticeable but not too loud and the gear spread was much better than the old Saginaw with the 2.76 rear. The shifter was just a bit confined by the floor and it was already way too hot so.....I'm just waiting

Re: Thoughts on a new supe rcase muncieM22/wide ratio

So, I figgured Id get back to this one last time now that it's been up and running and all broken in. The tranny is flat out awesome. It will shift as fast as you can move your hand. Smooth as butter. The gear spread is perfect for the 3.08 rear and 275/35 15 tires, and even tho' my engine is only a warmed up 283, it really woke up now that it is properly geared. If your looking for a simple old school set up, I give this tranny 2 thumbs up.

Re: Thoughts on a new supe rcase muncieM22/wide ratio

The tranny was $2600 delivered including 270 bucks parts and labor to have my hurst shifter mechanisim rebuilt and converted from fitting a Saginaw to a Muncie. I just mailed it off and he did that for me and sent it back with the tranny.... and it came with 2 qts of GL4 gear oil in the box. There were other expenses like having my rear end and drive shaft rebuilt as well but but they were pretty worn out so I was gonna have to do that anyway.
