What sealer to use for drip rails?
Hey guys,
The sealer in my drip rails is all cracked and I would like to redo it. What is the easiest way to remove all the old stuff? Also what type of sealer should I use? Does Napa carry anything that would work? 3M makes a product for that, it comes in a squeeze tube. It should be available at body shop suppliers. Just be sure to wear gloves when you use it cuz it is hard to get off your hands.

I used a seam sealer fom NAPA and a little heat (heat gun) to remove the old stuff.

Thanks for the replies guys. One more question. Should you sand it to help remove the old stuff? And if so, do you have to apply a primer so the sealer will stick better? Thanks..........Lumpy

3-M's fast-n-firm works great and runs under $10 a tube that you use with a caulking gun. I buy this at my local auto paint/supply store.
Scrape out all the old sealer and use a wire brush attachment on a drill for final clean up. Prime and then apply the new sealer, then prime again when dry. sand and prime surface first, use quality sealer primer gray for this, the good stuff, its in aerosol at napa also., not expensive

I just heard about a seam sealer from POR15, and it sounds like its permanent, paintable, and NEEDS rust to stick.

My paint is in pretty good shape and i dont plan on a paint job anytime soon. I have a leak when it rains and i think it is coming from some small craks in my drip rail. Is there any way i can seal these without a paint job? thanks a lot

If you are looking for a tempoary solution I would just put clear silicone over paint and all, til you can fix it correcty. It will not last forever but will do ok until you paint your truck.
