Re: 1969 long bed "Pappy"

Pappy is going to be a movie star! Bass Pro Shops is going to use him for a video shoot for Tracker Boats 40th anniversary. Maybe a commercial? Not quite sure but they looked a bunch of trucks and Pappy was the only one with original height and wheels/tire combo. We might have to drive out of town, so I've been trying to get ready. Up to now the furthest he had driven in the last 40 years is around the block.

I replaced the thermostat and gasket (leaking). Transmission filter and pan gasket (leaking). That slowed down the major leaks. Today I did the Pertronix Ignitor point conversion with a new cap, rotor, condensor. I took him for about a 15 mile highway jog. He starts easier and runs smoother.

Re: 1969 long bed "Pappy"

Man oh man Pappy and I just had one hell of a fight. I wanted to change the nasty old steering wheel. It was severely cracked and broken all over, which made driving it kind of unpleasant. Well, I used five different pullers in all, ended up breaking the snout off of one and breaking a puller bolt off in the wheel itself. She just would not budge. I wasn't going to fight the broken bolt so I ended up cutting two large chunks of the wheel hub off so I could slip a large two jaw puller on the back to metal. I had to be careful to avoid damaging the column cover or internal switch. After getting a good position on the puller and using a large deep nut on the shaft, I FINALLY got her to POP! Still, the last 1/2" of the shaft bent badly. I cut the threads off and repaired it cleanly with just enough left for a full nut and washer on the new wheel. NEVER have I fought a steering wheel like that, and I have a good collection of them. It had to be done though.

Also, got a new muffler...hard to tell if he's even running now, so quiet and smooth. I think we're ready for movie day.

Congrats and enjoy the shoot/vid! That is a nice wheel. I know what you mean about those making it unpleasant to drive. I've ripped my fingers open on a few of those sharp deteriorated wheels.

I really really like this truck! Will be interesting to see what Bass Pro does with it!

How do you like the pertronix ignitor? Thinking of that conversion myself.

So far so good. I replaced the cap, rotor and wires at the same time. The plugs were new. It starts quicker and seems to run better. Easier than HEI swap because you retain your original distributor, so no interference from fuel lines, etc. Took about 30 minutes with distractions and repairing a couple of wires.

Re: 1969 long bed "Pappy"

Love it. Great find. I feel your pain. I had a steering wheel that wouldn't come off. I ended up pulling the whole shaft out and replacing it from a different steering column. I never dreamed I wouldn't be able to remove it. Glad it worked out for you.

Well some guy came by and had to have it, so it went to Iowa. Not to worry though, any time I want to remember I can go by the Wonders of Wildlife Museum at Bass Pro and see the video : )

Do you have another in mind to do next? Did it happen to go to a board member by chance?
