Fuel Pump Question

My fuel pump took a crap and I was going to install one from O’Reilly’s and mentioned it to a buddy and he offered up this NIB Carter. It’s supposedly a high flow pump and seems much more substantial than they new one from O O O O’Reilly. I’ll have to buy a few new fittings for it to make it work with my plumbing, but is there any reason NOT to use the Carter?

I would figure out what’s cheaper, the fittings you need to make the Carter work, or the fuel pump from oreillys. Whichever saves $$$ would be the route I’d take. Either way works.

Not sure as to what "New Fittings" you require but that Carter is clockable.

I put this one on my truck in 2021 when still had the original 350 and went to the rear mounted tank. I replaced the engine with a redone small block 400 last summer (2022) and it working fine. I guess not cheap as I just looked and its 75.00 US now but I'd rather have something that will do the job long term that worry about 20/30 bucks more for something.

I recently replaced the pump on my 307 with one I got at Napa. Threads were stripped inside the outlet port. Hard line would not screw into it. Replacement was from CarQuest was cheaper and worked perfect. I used a stud instead of a blot on the inside mounting to make installation easier. Helps align the pump while tightening it up.

It depends on how old it is. Some old pumps had materials that were not compatible with fuels with ethanol in them. Some old pumps can have the diaphragm dried out.

I am running NOS AC fuel pumps on all of my vintage GM vehicles. I have non-ethanol fuel in this area for them. No failures from any of them.

I have more trust in a 40-50 year old US made pump than a brand new Chyna pump.

I've used those Carters several times over the years with no issues. Carter used to sell replacement diaphragm kits for them. As long as the pivot wasn't worn out you could rebuild them. We have one on my buddies GTO that runs 11.20's.

Fuel presure. The pump's pressure vs the carb's recommended operating pressure. You need to find out those values. If its too much pressure for the carb, it'll flood and run like crap.

We need to know what type engine and what carburetor you're running?

That Carter pump will be higher quality than an off-the-shelf [asian] fuel pump from ORAP.

That Carter pump was designed for carburetors. The only concern in regards to fuel pressure would be if your running a pressure sensitive carb like a 1406 Edelbrock then you MIGHT need to install a pressure regulator. They are high volume not high pressure pumps.

No reason not to run it, especially if it is low priced.

Plus it's rebuildable! Pretty sure this is the kit.

Got a $19 Carter from Summit. Works perfect with my Eddy carb. FP gauge says 5.5 PSI. All good

Agree 100%. I want to install the Carter unless there’s a reason not to use it. Has nothing to do with the cost.

Then you should be fine, as the Edelbrock Performer is essentially the same as a Carter AFB. I run a Carter AFB 9635, 600CFM. [It's about the same as an EDL 1405.]

An L6 would have a fuel pump that's ''inverted'' from the V8 orientation. I don't know if flipping a fuel pump has any effect on its operation. But I've always used the pump specified for each engine type.

So, once again, check those pressures. Edelbrock recommends a fuel pressure regulator set to 5.5 psi, or their fuel pump which runs at 6 psi.
