The Pits
I have little experience with body work and could use some advice for dealing with rust pitting. My cab, hood, and fenders, which are very straight, sat out for many years in an acidic environment. The surface rust has pits that don't sand out and I'm afraid if I keep at it, the metal will be very thin. Is there a prep or a process to take care of the rust in the pits so they don't come back?

sandblasting...there are some acids that will work as well..be sure to use epoxy primer on all bare metal...this would be answered better in paint and body section

Getting all the rust out of the pits as he suggested and high build primer and lots of block sanding. It's going to take some work but it will come out.

I'm not an expert, but I'm using Ospho to convert the rust in the deep pits. Then neutralize with water, clean with thinner, and prime.
Do some research on it. You'll get mixed reviews. Cheap enough, and I just picked up some at Ace Hardware today. If you look at Eastwoods "Afterblast" or POR's "Surface Prep", along with most rust converters, the active ingredient it Phosphoric Acid...Ospho. |
