Nys dmv , general dmv question

My dad has had so many k10s , k20s k30s
Silverados cheyennes everything but one truck stands out the
Most to me he had a 1980 sierra classic k20 4 speed manual, i think 4.56 gears if that sounds right. Blue and grey two tone with the orange hood stripes, had a 350 engine . rounded bodystyle, square headlights, i loved that truck the most and it was one of the most beat up trucks he had but i remember riding everywheres in it delivering firewood, towing stuff. Anything. I very much doubt the truck still exhists since it also had a heavy duty plow on it i believe a western or fisher . but anyways my question is would it be possible to get a copy or some information on the vin so i could build a clone of it or track down the original truck

Re: Nys dmv , general dmv question

tracking down by vin is touchy thing in most states .

you might get a decode of some stuff on vin but not all of it on these that i know of .

and being a new york truck + plow + you said beat up = its prob 98--99% gone i think . this coming from a fellow upstate new york guy who plays with these trucks and i am few and far between 1 of a hand full i know of in my area . there just not around up here anymore .

good luck on your search .

Best bet is to see if you can find some old insurance or registration papers stuffed in the bottom of a drawer somewhere. They would have the complete VIN on them.

Once you have the VIN you could send to the GM Heritage Center and they would pull the original invoice, which would have build dates, selling dealership, RPO content and pricing.

You could build a clone based on that information.

If you have a full VIN you may be able to get a full options list from CompNine...

It's hit or miss if they have earlier trucks in their database but you can check if it's there without paying a dime.

One way to find the vin would be if you still have the same insurance person he had back in the day. it's a long shot they'd have the old records, but worth a try.

Re: Nys dmv , general dmv question

Another route to find the vin --

When the truck got sold, most likely somebody grabbed the glovebox contents and stuffed them in a grocery bag, and pitched the whole thing into the attic. Equally possible, all tax relevant documents, invoices, and receipts are in that stack of shoeboxes in the spare bedroom closet. Somewhere in that stack is an insurance invoice or state inspection receipt. Some mechanics shops would include the vin number on their bills, as well.
