Battery Box Pieces

Not being that familiar with this, I'm trying to figure out why there is a separate tray in addition to the tray on the bracket. Is the stand alone tray smaller to help hold the battery in place? Or is the tray a replacement piece to deal with corrosion?

My truck doesn't have one currently. The battery is under the hood up by the radiator and the truck doesn't have inner fenders, yet. When I add them, I'll have to relo the battery and I'm thinking putting it back under the cab.

What are the pros and cons of having the battery in the stock location?

Pro's.... out of sight out of mine, off the fire wall making for a cleaner look.
Con's .. none i can think of..

Agreed with above on pros and cons. Even though mine is a rat rod I put mine back in the stock location just because I didn't want it on the firewall mostly.

OK, but why the separate tray from the weldment?

I don't remember any seprate tray. I will look at ours and see when the rain slows down.

I don't have one photo of that area of the frame to show but the battery "box" is three pieces riveted together. The two brackets that fasten to the frame and the pan that the battery sits in.

Pro: It's nicely out of the way but close to the starter for short battery cables.

Cons: You are limited to the size of the battery you can use.
The battery gets dirty and regular maintenance is a must. Cleaning the
battery and cleaning the posts and cables.
It's a pain if you have nice carpet or a nice floor mat in the truck as you have to disturb them to get to the battery.

That's about it. I'm still working on where the battery will go in my truck but I don't plan on putting it under the floor again.

Are you looking at an aftermarket tray?

Here is LMC:



#1 is the complete bolt in battery tray in the stock location (which sounds like what you would need)

#2 is just the tray by itself with no brackets (probably like you said - to deal with corrosion).

Hopefully this clears it up.

That is what it is.Guess that is why i couldn't remember so many parts.

That does clear it up. Without having one to look at I was unsure what I needed.

As for the pros and cons, knowing that the battery will have to be cleaned often leads me to think this might not be the best option. Now I'm wondering if an enclosure can be fabbed up to protect the battery from road debris. Or going with an under-bed option.

I'll have to crawl under the truck again tonight. See how much road splash would actually get up there. Also, I need to check that the PO didn't weld the battery access closed. Who knows. Hell, he ran the truck without the body bolted down for years, so anything's possible.

There was origonally a sheet metal mud flap rivited to the front cab mount.

Depends on how you will use the truck and your patience level for maintaining it. I left mine on the fire wall because knowing how I use the truck there is a high probability that anything hanging from the frame could get damaged or buried right when I needed to fix it. If its going to be a street truck use one of the drop down set ups, hidden but accessible without tearing up the carpet for maintenance. Or stick it in the bed with a cute cover (Coke cooler, ammo box, tool box, etc.). In the dutch build thread he made a really nice enclosure behind the seat with an access panel, make sure its vented to atmosphere.

I thought about behind the seat, like we would do with our demo derby cars, but I figured that might be frowned upon.
