67 chevy half ton, making into 3/4 ton 4x4

I have a 67 chevy I bought a year ago and hsve decidded to put on a later model frame so I can have a 6/4 ton 4x4. I am new to this site and am just trying to find some others who have done this. Im looking to find out which year works best and what kind of problems will I run into. I know my wheelbase is 127 and the 73-83 is 131 so I have 4 inches to add or to take off the frame. Any advice to this project would be great because I have not yet boughten the truck to house my body yet but am getting close and really want to find whats goimg to be the easiest here. All input is welcomed thank you!

Been there, done that!

What you need to remember: the frames are different lengths so relocating almost "everything" will be necessary to do it right.

The later model frame had saddle tanks which meant the rear frame raised quite a bit (forget how much.)

Also, frame has to be shortened, IIRC, 4 1/2".

Cut this length out of the "raised" portion of the frame to minimize height difference at a minimum.

Better option is to completely eliminate this "raised" section or cut out completely and weld in straight section.

Want some good advice?

Get a GMC frame which is usually leaf spring rear w/o the wider rear frame section. Then use the front spring hanger mounts off the later model frame to install the front leafs! Wallaa, instant 4x4 without the hassles. I tried the later frame "because I had it and it was free." Bad decision. That truck took so much work I will NEVER try it again!

Good luck! Trukman1

Re: 67 chevy half ton, making into 3/4 ton 4x4

I have found an 84 4x4 suburban I am considering using. It is only off by 2 1/2" it looks like the cab and forward will mount fine but the bed will have some problems and the end of the frame can be cut down to help. I may just put a flatbed on it that is slightly longer to cover the 2 1/2" would there be any problems in using this? It has cab mounts that appear to be the same as my 67 but I havent taken measurements yet

Keep in mind the shape of the frame (saddle tank).

Also, to do it right I had to move mounts and cut down 4-4 1/2" off frame. Do any frame cutting in the transition area from lower cab section to higher bed frame portion. this will help lower the rear (bed) frame rail.

YMMV, but if I had to do it over I'd locate a GMC leaf spring rearend frame, attach the front spring hangers and go on.
