Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

I can’t figure out how to connect the clevis end of the cable to the pedal assembly, there’s a good 1 1/2” gap I’d have to stretch the spring on the cable and I’m lucky if I can move it a 1/4” it’s so stout.

Also I have to put the round cable through the square hole in the firewall which doesn’t fit of course short of opening up the hole a touch any other suggestions?

Re: Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

first pry open that clamp and pull the cable through to reach the pedal second you have the wrong grommet in the fire wall its square and the right one will have the correct diameter hole these aftermarket cables suck I had to put a small hose clamp on either side of mine at the pedal side to keep it from sliding back and forth Im headed out to my grange to take some pictures for you but if Im understanding your problem I hope this helps

Re: Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

I had an LMC Cable like that.
I had to pry off their under rated china clamp and re-intall the OEM clamp from the broken cable. Both popped open with a 1/2'' steel chisel.
To get the pin thru the clevis -- you have to line it up with the hole, then put the small end thru the hole from the left with both holes in the clevis straddling the pedal attachment, then pin it with a cotter pin.
Then bolt the old clamp on the new cable to the pedal assembly.
It's a lot easier if the under-the-body end of the cable is left unattached until the pedal assembly is secured to the cab.
Then connect the pedal cable end to the main brake cable system.
You may have to re-adjust the throw of the cable tension by letting it in-or-out on the threaded rod. There's a hole in the threaded rod for the under frame spring. Re-attach the spring and test for tension -- E-Brake Pedal height. Set to personal preference.

LocDoc had the 2'' retract spring for inside the Pedal Assembly.
Wes at Classic Heartbeat had OEM underframe retract springs.

Re: Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

I'm not sure how clear my explanation was, so I'll try again.
If you are 1-1/2'' short of cable length, make sure the lower end of the cable is loose from the threaded rod that connects the whole cable circuit to the chassis spring.
Then attach to the Pedal Assembly.
Route your cable thru the old cable clamps. [The LMC clamps are crap.]
On reassembly, you may have to move the two jam nuts 1-1/2'' closer to the rear, before attaching the Chassis Return Spring.

Re: Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

This is a totally new brake system for this 72 C20, 4 wheel disc conversion with the Lugnut 4x4 Eldorado style rear caliper’s with e-brake, I have their universal cable system, factory repo pedal assembly and repo cable to pedal, hydro boost brakes, and custom lines.

The pedal cable is has not been connected to the rear cable.

I was hoping for better news that I wouldn’t have to pry that bracket apart but that looks like my only option unless there’s a better part out there.

It went easier than it looked. I knew the chinacrap cable end bracket wouldn't work like the original. I took the OEM end put it against my rear step bumper [for an anvil] put a 1/2'' cold chisel in the opening crack and whacked it with an engineer's single jack, but a big head ballpeen would have done. Opened right up perfectly. Same process to pull the shiny china part off. Then I lined up the new cable end and tapped it closed.

The Stock E-Brake system only works on the rear brakes anyway.

Re: Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

Since you’d be moving that cable forward a touch did that caged grommet that fits through the frame rail still line up?

The adjustment is done under the body, on the threaded rod end of the cable.

By ''caged grommet'' do you mean the cable end clip. It has a short 90* bend to fit in a hole in the Pedal Assembly.

Once you pry the old rubber grommet out of the firewall the cable end and clip will slip thru the rectangular hole.

Other cable clips went back to the old positions. If I could, I used the old ones, but where it was a big hassle, I may have used an LMC clamp.
It took several tries and a few days to sort it all out.

Re: Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

No the “caged” I’m referring to is the round cage like spring and rubber grommet where the spring starts at the lower half of the cable. That round piece goes through a hole in the side of the frame and locks in place.

Like I said I don’t have any old parts to go by or use as when I began working on this truck everything was stripped off the frame.

Re: Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

Sorry. I diodn't get that you are working from a bare frame.
You are handicapped by not having OEM parts to imitate and re-use.
Yes, now that I see the picture, I know what you mean.

My old cable had some kind of ''shuttlecock'' one-way locking device. It was a total PIA to get loose. I had to slip a 1/2 - 3/8'' hose clamp on the steel ''feathers'' to compress them and worm the cable out.
The replacement one would never go in all the way.
I settled for good positive brake stopping power at the pedal and let it go.
It's feathers might still protrude a half inch or so. I'm hoping regular action on a daily driver will get it to work itself in.

I looked for a thread of my own E-Brake saga, around last year, but I can't locate it under Subscribed Threads in the User CP section, or I'd try to link it. My question there, ''was which end comes loose to repair a broken inner cable?''
Answer was Both.
Title was something like,
''My E-Brake, Broke.''

Can you send a link to the YouTube clip you showed screeshots of?

Re: Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

I got the bracket loose and the plan is to relocate it back an inch or so, now I’m wondering if I’ll need to secure the cable inside the clamp so it won’t slide or if the spring grommet that goes through the frame will be enough.

Re: Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

That's the big clamp I was talking about. OEM was way stouter. But what you have will work. A short bolt or fender screw [they have a flange, and are tapered] secures the clamp and cable to the Pedal Assembly. I don't remember if there's a weld nut on the female end, or a bolt-washer /CLAMP/PART/ lockwasher - nut secures it.

Re: Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

Here’s my plan, I tested it in a vise and held so on to installing it, now I realize my cable from the RR is about 3’ too short to connect any suggestions on how to extend that?

If it's Three Feet you have the wrong cable section.

Re: Parking brake cable to pedal assembly

You mean the cable from the pedal because the ones from the calipers are the same length. I could have my local place make a longer one of those the pedal one I’d have to order somewhere?

I wonder if the cables from the calibers are shorter on a SWB vs LWB 68orange should have that answer? I also have done a rear disc conversion on a SWB and its sitting in my storage unit Ill be interested to know that answer im not where you are on that project I can't remember but im going to look when I got my setup for my current project wether I had to specify SWB or LWB ill let you know
