Bmxbang's 71 Project

Alright guys quick rundown of my 1971 Chevy C10.

I bought the thing as a project truck with a decent amount of work already done to it.

List of Major modifications so far.

It Runs and drives
5.3l Swap with 4l60 trans
Rear Disk Brakes
Boyd Fuel Cell
Currently has a 63 c-10 step side bed on it
Not a original SWB truck, the frame has been cut down

and about a billion other things I won't take the time to list

Short term plan is to get it cleaned up, over haul the suspension and do a 4/6 drop on it for the time being.

Long Term is Rework the entire thing

Current Pictures of how it looks...

Re: Bmxbang's 71 Project

Current status is I'm trying to figure out the best way to clean up the engine bay and hide/clean up some of the wire mess that it has currently going on.

I normally don't like bed swaps, but that 1st gen bed looks right at home on there. Nice project!

Im with you there, It will work for the time being but later on down the road it will be getting the correct Fleetside bed put on it. I will be interested to see how this bed looks with a 6inch drop in the rear though.

Re: Bmxbang's 71 Project

Started to tackle the suspension today. Plan is to pull everything off and get it cleaned up with all new components and refresh everything. I'll be doing an ECE 4/6 Drop Kit for now. I really want to get everything else buttoned up body wise and motor before I get crazy on the suspension but in the mean time I want it to be drivable and some what siting right. Finally after fighting with the upper balljoint for what seemed like hours I got it out so that's when I called it a day.

Lol the wheels where originally going to be the first to go on the truck. I figured I’d wait until spring to throw them up for sale though. Plan is to just grab some 16” steelies for now after I sell what’s on it. They are foose speedster wheels if I recall on it currently, im with you they just don’t fit the truck for me personally.

Finally got the front passenger side upper and lower A arms all dismantled . Luckily it was warm enough to break out the power washer and spray all the 50 year old grease off. Next is to get them Cleaned up and powder coated

Looks good, the control arm shafts are a little bit of a pain. I have the ece 4/6 drop still sits plenty high for daily driving.

“You ain’t got no legs Lt. Dan!”

Sold the wheels the other day so now I’m on the hunt for some cheap Steelies for now. The old ones wouldn’t of fit anyway after I got the suspension buttened up so away they went.

Re: Bmxbang's 71 Project

These lovely boxes from early classic enterprises showed up yesterday day and lucky me I had today off. Went to town and got the from finished up and back on the ground. Also I grabbed some cheap steel wheels off a 91 1500 and that’s what I will be rolling around on for awhile until this thing gets closer to being done. Hopefully have the rear knocked out a little faster than the front took me lol

Re: Bmxbang's 71 Project

Looking good man! The rear end should go a lot faster for you. I have a question for you, do you know if the new steel wheels you got can take an old style cap? I love that look also and want to have a set on hand so my nice chrome wheels don't get jacked up during my work.

No sadly I don’t think the OBS Chevy steel wheels will take the older style caps. I think anything square body and older will though. If I recall correctly.

Re: Bmxbang's 71 Project

bmxganger,
Beware when using the later wheels (that have metric lugs) the taper on the wheel/lug nuts is different. The lug nuts will not fully seat properly into the wheel...unsafe.

Dorman makes lug nuts that allow conversions, either way...man those new front wheels look soooo much better, already...

Re: Bmxbang's 71 Project

Well she's together and running the best she has since I got her. Next up is new headers and exhaust. They way it was ran before won't work with the current stance, plus it was a backyard weld job on this exhaust so it has leaks everywhere.

Looks great man. Quite a difference with the truck being level and lower. No more stink bug stance!

Thank you! Going to get the exhaust cleaned up and re-ran along with new long tube headers for it to clean it up some. Then get a tune and call it good for awhile on the big stuff.
