1972 with 558 paint code

I'm excited to join the 67-72 GM truck club after purchasing a 1972 SWB Chevy. After researching throughout the many pages of this well established forum I was able to figure out what colors my truck was painted by the factory. Member SS Tim has posted some pictures of this paint code (Dark Blue roof, Medium Blue body) but it does not seem to be very popular as i cant not find many trucks painted back to this code. Does anyone have pictures of their truck painted back to the 558 color option? Was this a rare paint code or just not as popular and painted over?

Re: 1972 with 558 paint code

Welcome to the board!
As you have seen there are not a lot of trucks around still painted in the 558 or 559 scheme. The blues are close and most of the trucks I see are just painted the base body color with only the divider trim as a reminder of past two-tones.
Don't have many pictures and most are the same truck!
Grabbed a pair of links that might help some though.
Post up a picture of your truck and the SPID too.

Re: 1972 with 558 paint code

Here are the pictures of my truck, as you can see the prior owner painted the roof white. It a 350 truck, 3 speed was on the tree but converted to the floor. solid truck just needed a new owner.

My original plan was to do white roof, medium blue body like it is not but after finding out it was originally the 558 paint code it would be nice to do the original color.

Re: 1972 with 558 paint code

Here is a non paint code question but since my SPID is posted here ill ask. With the Cheyenne trim and belt molding my truck should have both upper and lower molding, correct? But is the lower black or wood grain molding? and my gauge cluster is black should it be wood grain also?

Re: 1972 with 558 paint code

Those two paint codes are both a really nice combination. I thought I have seen a olive/dark olive paint combo on here as well.
The truck with the 559 code is a beautiful truck!

1972BlueC20 love the truck! And glad you kept it to the 559 code. Any idea on how many of the 558 and 559 codes were produced?

Cheyenne trim included the lower bodyside moldings with the wood grained infill. Plus the woodgrained tailgate band.

Your SPID shows the optional upper bodyside moldings (RPO B85) as well.

Being a two-tone it also had the paint divider trim seperating the roof.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=572206

Moving to the inside a Cheyenne had woodgrained door trim panels, a black cluster bezel and a body color glovebox without trim or badge.

Thanks man!

Not sure on the production numbers. Maybe SS TIM would know....I'd sure like to know as well.

Once again your knowledge is impressive and very helpful. The more information I'm gaining the more I'm realizing I want to bring this truck back to the factory trim and paint. Wheels, tires, and suspension on the other hand will be aftermarket.

Sorry for my earlier response. My internet connection went down before I could finish and proof read. This is from the GM Heritage document for the 1971 model year.

engineer_gregh - Thanks, all info is appreciated!!

70cst - You have a beautiful truck! My hopes are to have my cosmetic finishes as nice as your in the end.

I'm thinking cragar ss on mine and not sure what size drop. Ive just begun to scratch the surface exploring the many threads with lowering and tire size.

The only thing better than a dark blue truck is a two tone blue like the trucks pictured here! Nice trucks gentlemen.

Cbaer, welcome to the forum. I'm not far from you, and go through Mankato several times a year! Let me know if you need help with anything.
