Re: anybody running a PTO winch?

No,I had a truck with one,and want to put one in my truck some day. Something about a V8 powered winch is just something I love.

Re: anybody running a PTO winch?

If you want to install a front mounted PTO driven winch on your 78 GM truck first off, is a manual SM465 or a auto? The auto has no PTO provisions. Only the SM 465 has PTO outlets. If so a Chelsea Model 340 or a 352 reversible PTO unit will fit up on the drivers side with the proper input gear installed. The oil filter on the V8 engine will have to be remote located because to shaft to the winch need that space. The winch unit must have a drivers side input. The front bumper and winch mounting must be custom made as no factory made units exist. The shift linkage for the PTO unit also had to be custom made. Is this a lot of work and bother? Sure is! Would I do it again? I think I am too old and worn out now. Does the winch and truck still run? Yes it does, and it still can make any electric winch look like the little toy junk that it is......

Re: anybody running a PTO winch?

Some of the old Willy's wagons and trucks came with a PTO. Like having a tractor you drive everywhere. They would run a winch on the front, or anything off the back. Pretty slick.

Re: anybody running a PTO winch?

I think a PTO can be had for the NP205. Not so sure about an NP203 since 78 is around the full time TC time.

Re: anybody running a PTO winch?

NP 205s have a pto provision. But an automatic with NP208 or NP203 does not.

This pic tells of the 203 Full Time transfer case operation and that the "N" position can be used with pto operation.

Re: anybody running a PTO winch?

willett, my '71 K20 has a PTO driven Braden LU-2. Depending on which wrap, cable size, rpm, etc, it is generally considered to be a 10-12,000 lb winch. The setup on my truck looks very similar to some of the setups I've seen on Dodge trucks from the late 50s and 60s, though I haven't seen any GM trucks with this winch and bumper on it. The Dodge literature from that time calls it an 8,000 lbs winch, I'm sure for liability reasons. The truck has an SM465 and NP205, and the reversible PTO is mounted on the transmission. You can see the custom lever and bracket bolted to the floor next to the shifter.

I'll get some pictures of the driveshaft for you as soon as its out of the snow, but here are some shots from when I first got the truck last spring and started cleaning it up:

I know yours is a '78, so I'm not sure how close the driveshafts would be to what I have in the '71, but I don't imagine they'd be far apart. FWIW, my 350 has the standard length oil filter on it and clears the driveshaft fine. They also make a shorty filter that you could use if space is tight.

That all being said, if someone can identify what model PTO it is that I have, I'd be eternally grateful. Never been able to nail down exactly what it is.

Re: anybody running a PTO winch?

Had one in a jeep M38A1 in the 60's. Loved it because the winch rpm was synced to the transmission speed. Also didn't have to worry about running the batteries down.

Re: anybody running a PTO winch?

I had one on the 71 3/4 ton I'm building but I have removed it, it was ran off of the np205 in the truck, and was operated by a pull cable inside the truck. I can get you some picks if you are still interested.

Re: anybody running a PTO winch?

Oh ok. I never knew that. I thought I heard they didn't have a PTO provision. I always steered clear of anything with a 203 in it,so know nothing about them.

Re: anybody running a PTO winch?

Flyingtim01 That PTO unit looks like a Muncie RG series. It looks like it is mounted inverted from the parts breakdown. There should be a small plate attaches with four bolts on the end of the case. It is there to check gear backlash. I know it is not a Chelsea because both reversible units from them have a large six bolt cover on the side.
