67-68 Radiator Gravel guards - Holes vs No holes

Going thru a few 67-68 radiator gravel guards and notice some have a 3” diameter hole at both ends and some don’t Why? Is this design to reduce air pressure in front on radiator during driving conditions or some other reason.

Thanks in advance.

I never noticed that. I'll have to check my 67 and 68. I once talked the seller of a '71 GMC Jimmy down by $250, since his truck didn't have the shelf. I later found out they were deleted in MY 1969. [I wasn't trying to be a jerk. I thought it was a missing piece...]
I like the piece because you can keep a couple bottles of fresh oil there for emergencies in the bush.
Always wondered if the Gravel Guard could be refitted to a '69-Later doghouse?

Re: 67-68 Radiator Gravel guards - Holes vs No holes

So I just went out in the 103* sun to find out. Both my '67 K/10 Suburban and my '68 C/10 Stepside have no big 3'' holes outboard of the two 7/8'' holes. Both trucks are from the Fremont Cal plant.
I see your rusty one has the holes, but the black painted one does not. Is that a repop? I know they recently started making them again for the aftermarket.

OK. Makes sense. My GMC's a '71, so I never noticed. If I do get an oil can shelf for my Jimmy. I'll need 3'' holes.
