how do find out what kind of gears you have in your rear end ? and how do you check without taking off the rear plate ? do you count how many time the tire goes around .

Re: gears

exactly, jack up one side (open differential), turn the tire one ration and count how many times the driveshaft turns. However many times the ds turns is the ratio. If it's got a posi/locker, you will have to jack up both sides.

Re: gears

For an exact ratio, remove the driveshaft from the rear and on the end of the pinion, they stamp the gear tooth count of the ring and pinion. It a matter of using 4th grade division after that! It might look like this: xx 41-11 then, 41 divided by 11! as an example, of course!
