Old School 4x4 Wheels

I'm looking for some old school style 4x4 wheels. I want deep dish chrome wheels. I like slotted mags but they are getting tough to find especially for a good price. I kind of like these but dont know what they're called and am still looking, thanks.

Re: Old School 4x4 Wheels

If I had to guess, you could go on the Weld Racing web site and find the name of this wheel. Not particularly old school. More like 90s era.

Re: Old School 4x4 Wheels

rednwhite, i'm with you on an old school look. Personally, the wheels in your pic don't seem very old school to me - but I think you got the diameter right. I think it would be well worth your while to hold out for some slots - NOTHING says old school like some faded slots. Another option is wagon wheels - but my guess is you're wanting a bit more hot rod-type? I have chrome wagons for sale, but they're 8 luggers unfortunately. I've give them to you if you'd come pick em up!

Re: Old School 4x4 Wheels

Weld does not have these for sale anymore. I have chrome wagons on my c20. They're okay. But I like a deep dish and m/t III better but thanks!

Re: Old School 4x4 Wheels

The pic above is a Weld Racing typhoon . What size are you looking for?

I have 2 sets of typhoons.
15x14
16.5 x14

The later years had forging problems and they were cracking .

Re: Old School 4x4 Wheels

Using old school mags is expensive. You pretty much only find 16.5 inch rims and its really hard to get tires in 16.5. I just put this set together for my K20 and I think Im around 2400 bucks. That's a lot of money to me, but I really wanted the look. I still need to find lug nuts, just haven't had a chance to figure that part out yet.

I know the 24 inch rim guys spend way more on theirs, glad that's not my style lol.

Re: Old School 4x4 Wheels

CrewCab59 i think the widest i want is 12. Thanks for the name though!
And CG im definitely with you. By old school I mean small wheel with a deep dish. Not really old school. But I kind of consider them old school compared to these new goons with 20's that do nothing with a truck.

We think the same, but I still need to make a couple corrections. 15-16.5" wheels aren't small diameter, they are what belong on a truck, always have, and have only changed to bigger for some perverted sense of fashion started by ghetto drug dealers on the Blvd. That crap is "new school" (or just plain stupid, to me) and classic wheels are "school", a place to be educated. I think many use "old school" for anything that isn't made any longer. So, even these modern Weld Racing Typhoons from the later-90s the younger guys call old school. As "style" came along to play such a large roll in truck wheels, to the point that vanity outweighs function to a car-like level, the nice looking wheels for those who like the truck as much or more than the wheel got discontinued.

Up until about the time those Typhoons were made, you didn't have wide 16" tires available, so no wide wheels where offered. They were all 16.5 if they were wider. On 1/2t trucks the size was 15" straight on through the years GM sold solid axle trucks, with 16 and 16.5s available for special tires. Change for the sake of change, not improvement, is the same as a woman who spends 3 hrs putting make-up on and changing her clothes 5 times before going out the door . I remember when trucks were built for those who know what they want, not gimmicky gadgets and fashion statements for the fickle shopper

Re: Old School 4x4 Wheels

I agree with Special-K. The new stuff is just plain old ugly. I wouldn't even know where to begin to look if I had to buy new wheels. I had a set of slots lying around so I used them. They aren't the best and it would have taken a ton of work to polish up and I'm not up for keeping them polished so I painted them. I'm into mine for around 1600 with new tires. Still cheaper than new everything. But I still have to get lug nuts. Not looking forward to buying 32 of them!!

Re: Old School 4x4 Wheels

I agree with most of the new stuff being ugly also. I finally found a set of welds for my k-20, now there are no tires. Makes me wonder if I should start hoarding 15s. I hate todays TRANSFORMER truck look.

Re: Old School 4x4 Wheels

I'd rather run a set of tarnished aluminum slots than a free set of brand new umpteen inch Glamour Stars. The worst thing, other than being ugly, is they have nooks and crannies you'll never keep clean and al kinds of edges to snag a knuckle on when cleaning. Weld Racing made some really nice wheels in the '90s. I ran Outbacks on a '95, but they discontinued those because they looked good and made sense. Then there were the Sidewinders, equally good looking no BS truck wheels. They dropped those too. I remember when you had a couple few choices and they all looked right on a truck. I even put white spokes on my '72 Highlander when I got it. I figured everyone thought they were ugly, while spending huge bucks on wheels that were uglier, I'd show them all (at least the ones who know class) how good they could look. I had some 16.5 x 9.75 steelies, but took advantage of 4WPW buy 3 get one free deal and all they sell are 16s, so I got the good deal on quality tires while I spent as little as possible on wheels. The truck was all original with patina and dinged dull chrome anyway, so I went for the "been this way since the '70s" look and the white wheels looked great with the 2-tone

I may go with white wagons after seeing that Special-K. I'm going with two-tone red and white like my c20.

What size is your lift?
Wheel size?
Tire size?
I may have to copy you. That looks good!

Take a look at Raceline Wheels they are a real close copy of the weld wheels that are no longer available. Summit racing sells them. American Racing has a new wheel very close to the old slot style AR969.

Eagle 589s are still available, and I think are a nice, normal looking wheel.

Re: Old School 4x4 Wheels

With the lack of 16.5 tire choices, I eventually replaced my rims with WheelVintiques 16x10 rims on 8x6.5 lug pattern. Looks great with BFG TA KO2 315x75x16 rubber, and I think I'll be able to use stock style dog-dish hubcaps.

Probably. I fear the day when the only truck wheels available will be 18"+. Seems as if they discontinue all of the cool wheels.
