Re: Custom Camper question

Here are a couple of my 72 Flint CC. The VIN is hard to read but the 7th digit is an "F" These are my original 72 doors (not going back on the truck).

Did you get those 2500s off a truck or were they already loose? I've never seen them on a truck and wonder where/when they were used. I'd assume it worked the same as Chevy in '69-71 where the Custom Camper badge went in place of regular badge. But, I also wonder if they were from a ValueVan, because GM offered those for conversion into campers.

Thanks for posting - further evidence that CC emblems on Flint trucks were mounted differently than those from other plants like the Janesville Custom Deluxe fender emblems. That's a top shelf K20 you have btw!!! More pics?

Cool beans! Who knew? Well, I didn't. Factorystock knows that I have a 66 Ford F100 Camper Special and I always thought GM never made a comparable product. Should've known better. Don't recall ever seeing one, though. I know the 1/2 Ford Camper Specials are pretty rare.

Re: Custom Camper question

Deadhead- Why sure I have more pics....1st one is the bed in its first coat of primer, the 2nd is fitting the panels after three years of body work to make sure the gaps are right (then disassembled for paint) and the 3rd is after the front clip and cab were painted and re-assembly on the frame for gaps. The bed should be done pretty soon. The 1st and 3rd were taken at my painters shop, the bed is on a trailer specifically for painting beds.....

Re: Custom Camper question

Jocko- Thanks, I haven't posted a lot of pics yet as it is a moving target so far. Search my user name for the couple I have posted. For some reason I can't bring myself to drill the holes in my freshly painted doors for the Custom Camper emblems. I found a set of rust free 72 doors to replace my originals. Not sure I will drill the doors, but the SDIP does have the CC equipment listed.

Re: Custom Camper question

The "F" in the VIN on Custom Campers stands for "Forward", in reference to the Custom Camper door scripts. It's a little know fact, but I know these things

Re: Custom Camper question

If you are going to drill for the custom camper emblems use a step bit. I drilled a LOT of holes in mine after paint for trim and had no problems this way.

Re: Custom Camper question

I realize this is some serious thread resurrection going on here but I am still confused...big surprise I know.

On a 71 GMC with the following SPID, where would the custom camper emblems be? On the door or on the fenders? What would they say? Custom Camper/20 or just custom camper?

Thanks,
Jimmie

Re: Custom Camper question

Jimmie - do you have the new green truck yet? Curious if it has emblems and I can't recall from the sale pics. If Chevy I'd say the cc emblems would be door mounted as were 72. I believe gmc has "custom camper" on the fender emblem.

Re: Custom Camper question

I am the proud new owner of a 1972 K20 Custom Camper. the CC emblems are on both doors above the handles....one slight problem: the passenger side door is broken in half. Does anyone have any CC emblems or know of any that I could purchase?

Re: Custom Camper question

Welcome! Post some pics of your truck. K20 Custom Camper is about my favorite combo! Nobody makes the cc emblems, but they can be found here on the parts board. If you post a Want To Buy ad there, you'll get a pretty quick response I bet.

The emblems are not located off an "edge" but are referenced from specific locations. This is done using a common Cartesian coordinate system. To keep things simple on these drawings it is a location aft and up from fixed "0" locations. Unfortunately these reference points are not common knowledge. But you can, through diligence, locate production hole/s to use as local reference.

In this case it is very clear where the driver's side emblem ends and the passenger side starts.

They are both 0.38" AFT of station 50.

As your good luck would have it the upper (belt) door molding has a hole at station 50.

So all you really need to do is make a layout template for the pin holes using the factory spacing and vertical differences from a fixed waterline reference, 35 in this case.

Then position it using the hole at 50 as you fore and aft locator.

Can't help you with the waterline 35 as to exact location but if I were to guess I would say it is very close to 6.06" up from that very same molding hole at 50. The molding is down 1.06" from 30. Convention says this is likely an inch based system so 35 is probably 5" above 30 as projected.

Since the emblems are down 1.27- 1.41" from the 35 waterline it locates comfortably in the radius above the door panel where we expect to see it as in the pictures.

Hope this helps, if needed or to donate dog food please contact me.
Hmmm.. I am going to resurrect this thread for some help. I dont have "belt" molding holes as reference. Has anyone measured these holes from the top of the door and from the edge? I am about to "eye" it and call it a day. But if someone can give me some initial markings it would be appreciated. The 35 waterfall mark from the top edge would be a good starting place maybe.

Subbed, very interesting thread. I just uncovered Blue to look. St Louis built and rear mounted close to the door edge.
