Re: Vintage Air

One belt on the compressor should be good. Do you have it adjusted properly? Do you need to get a smaller belt, so you have more adjustment range?

Also, is the belt the correct width and depth so that it rides all the way into the groove of the pulley without bottoming out in the pulley?

Re: Vintage Air

I have Vintage Air too. Never had a problem with running a single belt to the compressor. Make sure the belt squeal is not coming from your alternator. The A/C will put a load on the alternator that will generate internal resistance that could cause a loose alt belt to slip. Also make sure you are running the proper belt on the compressor. If the belt is too narrow, it can bottom out in the compressor pulley and cause the belt to slip. You always want the belt to seat on the sides of the pulley grove, not the bottom. Hope this helps.

Re: Vintage Air

Is your current belt lined up "straight"?

Re: Vintage Air

If you have a fan clutch that is locked up it will put a heavy load on the belts. If the a/c system is over charged or the fan is weak it can put excess load on it. If none of these ideas work put a gauge on the high side & see if the pressure is excessive.

Re: Vintage Air

I had the same problem with my vintage air squeaking, slipping etc. After trying different belts/lengths angles etc, I called vintage air. They told me my belt was too narrow...that I need a 1/2" wide belt. I was skeptical, but the new replacement belt worked great. The belt actually rides a little bit above the pulley (see pic). Vintage air rep said that's how it should be. My belt is NAPA part # 25-9540 and it's 31/64" wide and 54-3/8" long. Works great.
