How can one find out what emissions equipment originally came on a truck? In my case an 85k20. The PO bought it in California but, he was not the original owner. It doesn't have any diagram under the hood, but it does have the SPID.
Please don't ask why I need to know, just help me find a way to know what it originally had. How do they know at the smog stations? Do they go off the VIN?

The stations have a book that tells them what make and model has/had what, beit either a California truck or a 49 state. Pretty sure an 85 had just about everything on it being carbureted. AIS, EGR, EVAP, TCS, CAT CONV, and then some

Wish i could help. my only suggestion would be to run the VIN. I've googled gm vin decoder in the past and that has been useful. hope that helps!

Can you post a pic of the SPID? It should show on there; either NA5 (Federal), NA6 (High Altitude) or YF5 (California).

If you happen to have the LS9 5.7L small block or the LH6 Diesel engine - those were not available in California (Federal emissions only).

L25 straight six, LT9 5.7L or the LL4 diesel could go either way.

Keith-once again you're awesome. Thanks you sir for the link and the manual. It has answered every question I had on my 85 I recently bought.

My spid shows that it was originally a CA truck (YF5). The PO bought it in CA and brought it back (and registered it) here in AZ. We don't have emissions checks here, only in the metro areas. That's great, except, I plan to relocate in the next few years (place unknown-depends on job) and I was trying to think ahead in case I end up somewhere that has smog checks. All the emissions that were removed are long gone.

This moves my concerns into the next issue of engine swaps. I would assume (probably wrong) that there exists some sort of standard language about swaps? If you swap a later engine with FI into an earlier vehicle with a carb, how can it be possible to retain the original emissions (CHA, AIR, TRC, etc.)?
